After nearly getting cleaned up a couple of times I'm thinking of getting a screen mounted in car camera. Any one got any good feed back on these devices ...Gary

I did a lot of research into them before buying mine (you tube rocks for that kind of thing!).. and ended up getting a Papago PW1.. they are well known in Asian countries and the states for GPS and in car recorders..

I ordered it on ebay for about $230.. (price has dropped with new model release now).. it has full HD video., widescreen etc It came with an 8 gig card but have since purchased a larger card. A friend spent a lot more than I did on his in car recorder and even he has pointed out that my video quality is much higher than his (even though his is supposed to be full HD too)..

here's a link for mine.. Papago P1W Car DVR Camcorder 1920X1080-FULL HD with Free 8G SD Card | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Papago-P1W-Car-DVR-Camcorder-1920X1080-FULL-HD-Free-8G-SD-Card-/330611582345?pt=Camcorders_Professional_Video_Came ras&hash=item4cf9fc6589) but there is now a new one out called the Papago 2X (link: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-PAPAGO-P2X-Full-HD-1080P-Car-DVR-GPS-Logger-G-Sensor-127-Degree-Free-8G-SD-/320862309341?pt=Car_Audio_Video&hash=item4ab4e24bdd#ht_6001wt_1396) but if you plan on getting some 4WD footage it may not suit as it automatically data protects the previous, present and next video files when an impact, emergency brake occurs or the car tilts.. my hubby sent an email off to the seller asking if that can be disabled today (will let you know the reply if you are interested) as he wants to purchase that model because it has an inbuilt GPS logger and speed display..

I had to really hunt to get the Papago - as far as I can see there is only one seller of them on ebay and apart from ordering from America I couldn't find any in the country.. I am really happy with the video quality (and I'm a professional photographer so am rather fussy with this kind of stuff).. and I was very impressed with the service from the seller and how fast it was delivered (about 4 days from Taiwan).. anyway there are loads of in car recorders on the market so you may want to do your own research but for what it's worth I really like mine.. :)

And it will probably do the job that you want it to do too.. I was a little fussy with mine as I wanted to ensure that number plates could be read after a nasty incident that a friend had when another car smashed into and wrote off her vehicle and then took off - she didn't see the numberplate so the car was untraceable. :)

Am in the trucking industry and there are a few guys @ work that have their own cameras. They have saved a couple of the guys jobs because they can show the bosses what exactly happened before.
I'll find out what brand, etc when I ring one of them later today.
I think they were around the $220-$250 mark, but they could be cheaper by now.

cheers

I've got a couple, both purchased off eBay.
One cost about $150, the other cost about $35 (plus the SD card).
Both work pretty well and to be honest I can't really tell the differance in picture quality (the more expensive one is a little simpler to use). They both record in VGA so will play on any computer.

I have a GoPro, but use it on my bike. I'm more interested in the Funniest Home Video type footage so I use a chest mount or helmet mount, but I will be able to mount it in the Land Rover if it's ever finished.

The GoPro is probably not the cheapest, but it has all sorts of applications. You can even take it surfing. The casing is waterproof and very tough, or if you want better sound quality you can use the "skeleton" casing which is just as tough but not waterproof.

They are quite good - very acceptable quality - not HD, but quite watchable. Rangieman has one just the same, and took some footage while we were in Wombat the other weekend. We played it back on a projector that night, and even on the big screen (a sheet hung between two trees:p) it was a good picture. I think a few forum members will be after these now. I have seen them for a lot less than that - check these guys out - 2.5" Car IR HD Night Vision Vehicle Video DVR 270° 6 LED Recorder Camera | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-5-Car-IR-HD-Night-Vision-Vehicle-Video-DVR-270-6-LED-Recorder-Camera-/200711562840?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ebb576658)

This one only has a 2 Gig card, which is probably why it is cheaper, but you can pick up a larger SD card for a few bucks these days.

Edit - Just bought one myself...:p

This will record in 640x480- quite OK but HD is far & above better quality.
They advertise 1280x960 but fail to mention that is the still pictures, not video.
My version of this has just died- after 7 months, but it works 5 plus hours a day, so I'm torn between getting one the same ($26.00 to $35.00) or going one up to HD ($80.00-$120) or one with HD & GPS ($150 +)

Cheers, David

Hi All

I would be very interested if another camera could be added to the unit, so that the display could be used for a rear view for reversing.

I have one of those.

Mine prefers bright daylight. Not too good when it gets a bit darker.

I've been thinking of doing this too. So far only found the GoPro which looks brilliant. Didn't realise you could get similar things for such cheap prices. At $30 a unit one of those eBay jobbies look like a bargain. Thanks for those links.

If you drive at all in the course of your employment one would assume you have a responsibility to drive safely..

therefore I assume you could buy one of these units and claim it against tax as it is your method of being able to prove something required by work. (EG its a safety/security tool)

LONGREACH I am certain that you could claim yours and cards - also maybe discs and possibly part of your computer to be able to download the info on tax..

as for others (requiring to drive from point a to point b) Can anyone advise if thats correct or not?

Hi all,
Just ordered one of the $30 units off eBay, looks great for the money.

Only a little confused, on the details it said sd compatible, yet the link to purchase a card was for a micro sd.

From those of you that have already purchased one, which is it so that I can order a card in advance?

Any thanks,

Lee

Just received mine this morning - 8 days from order, pretty happy with that:) They take a standard SD card - I'm playing with mine at the moment - easy to setup and use. I will stick it in the car later and take it for a spin to see if I can catch some dickheads doing stupid stuff.:p

It was there when I got home. The SD card slot is standard size but I fitted a micro one into a holder and put that in. Its 8 gig and gives 1 hour 27 minutes of recording. Camear looks pretty good for the money I've had a little play with it but it needs a 12 Hr charge.

Well I've had the in car camera a week now, after translating the Chinese/English translation and buying the sd/mmc card thought I'd get the biggest for the longest footage, bummer $90.00 bucks, the camera was only $40.00 well it all works great the pic is supposed to be HD but not sure. The neg is it takes forever to down load the images to the laptop but it does get there, already enough pics for the cops to charge 8 idiots with dangerous driving etc if I could be bothered. The image is to big to email and I can't work out how to get the video from the mac to the iPad, but all in all very happy with it ..thanks for all the replys too ...Gary

After the 12 hour charge, the battery in mine only lasted 30 minutes.
Apart from that, a nice little unit worth the price I paid.

I thought it was illegal to have anyhing mounted on the widscreen/dash that was in your line of sight, I remember when Sat-Navs became popular the cops were booking people for the positionig of their Sat-Navs, looks like the cops will have another thing to blitz, BTW if you have an accident and You're in the wrong, what then, hide it, Regards Frank.

hi, it's a lot more high tech than mine, mine has infa red, movement activated , time, date and sound , but not the other features as the one your looking at, but for $40.00 + sd/mmc card I'm happy with mine, a good thing about yours is it sits behind the mirror....Gary

It's very similar to the Papago 2X that my hubby bought.. I can't really see anything that it has different - except for the shape... and the price. Papago 2X is about $270

Mine sits's behind the rear vision mirror so is not in my line of sight.. I think that most of the dash cameras sit around there so it shouldn't be a problem.. :)

As long as it's not within the arcs of the wipers you should be OK.

A low cost method is to use an app for a smartphone that will do the same thing. I'm currently using AutoGuard Blackbox available from the android market to work as an in car camera, although there are many others now.
I have set it up to record video in a continuous loop. The program overlays speed and location information from the gps onto the recorded video as well as recording audio from inside the vehicle as well.

All this information could prove invaluable for a routine traffic infringement as well as the more serious incidents.
