View Full Version : Lurch has clutch shudder......

But not all the time......mainly when he's cold...first thing in the morning....
Or if he hasn't been driven for a day or two.....

It feels like it might be a wet clutch......but I've pulled the wading plug out of the bottom of the bell housing.......
and nothing drained out......

I have recently noticed a fuel leak....but the shudder has been happening now for over a year....
Here is my question for the experts.....is there anything that could be leaking and finding its way onto the clutch.......?

There is an oil leak......was a coolant leak......and there is now a fuel leak.....

Or could a dodgy dual mass flywheel give these symptoms......?
The shudder goes away after a good drive.....and all feels normal.....
Yet other times it's there all along.....

The clutch does need to be replaced...but I've been putting it off for the last 2 years due to lack of funds....and it also being a pain to remove.......

Does anyone have any ideas......?

I have no experience with dual mass flywheels, but the following observations may help.

Although clutch shudder immediately points to the clutch, experience shows that it may, in fact, have nothing to do with the clutch. There are three other possible areas that can give indistinguishable effects.

The first of these is loose or soft engine/gearbox mounts - although this is less likely to be temperature sensitive.

The second is a dragging handbrake - which may well be temperature sensitive. Both of these should be easy to check.

The third is some fault that changes engine power substantially at clutch engagement rpm due to movement on engine mounts. Usually related to linkage control of throttle plus a carburettor flat spot or excessive movement on the engine mounts, in this case (I assume from the reference to a dual mass flywheel that it is a TD5) I would guess that it could be due to an electrical connection, probably in a sensor or sensor connection that is sensitive to engine movement. Probably not easy to check!

I had these symptoms. It was a coolant leak from the plug in the side of the head behind the exhaust manifold.

Mine does this too. It often sits for a week or so, and when I first drive after it's been sitting the clutch shudders until it warms up.
I assumed it was something leaking onto the clutch plate, but haven't investigated further as yet.
Clutch was done by previous owner at about 160k Now has 220k.

So I'm not alone in this......the plug in the side of the head was leaking coolant last year.....but I tightened it up and it stopped leaking.....

The shudder was still there......

There is a fuel leak I noticed last time I had it up on a hoist.....but the shudder was there before this leak......

Soft engine mounts shouldn't give a violent shudder......even if they were broken.....they shouldn't shudder like this does.....
Some times it's really violent......then it just bites and were off.......other times....it all feels fine....
If it was the engine mounts.....wouldn't it be there all the time.....?

I will have a good look at them next time I get him onto a hoist.....

It appears this is more common than I thought......

Oh.....there is something that feels like a dragging handbrake....at slow speeds.....but if I back that off any more it won't work at all......

I think that may be a different problem other than the handbrake......the drum spins freely without any dragging when I jack the wheels up and spin it by hand....

So that ones got me a bit knackered.....

A couple of years ago I did find a broken tooth off a gear.....but that was after I had drained ALL the oils.....so I don't know where that came from......
I found it in the bottom of my drain tin.....so it's either from the front diff.....back diff.....gearbox...or transfer case.........
This may be what im feeling instead of the handbrake dragging....?

I need to stop being lazy......

Could it be a rear main seal? Don't have much knowledge of the Td5 but I recently had some clutch shudder in my isuzu county. First thought was rear main and I had a look by popping off the inspection plate. After half a can of degreaser a considerable amount of oil was pouring out.

The shudder I have isn't consistent but that could be due to the other oil leaks and therefore no oil left for the rear main to leak ;)

ID open up with a contaminated clutch and possible glazing on the friction plate with polishing on the pressure sides.

it doesnt take a lot to start it and once its started it just gets worse.

so what could have contaminated it.....the coolant leak over a year ago......?
or is there something else that could be leaking i should check for.......?

there isn't much clutch left at all......in fact....im down to the rivets.....but its not slipping yet.......
i don't think it'll be glazed.......not with my driving.......never glaze clutch brakes or cylinders.......err....or tyres.....

my biggest concern is......when i eventually change the clutch.....i don't want it to happen again.......
I'm just trying to find out if there are any common leaks i should check for......

the most confusing part is the intermittentness of it all.......(i think i just made a new word......)...
