well, I have been working on cleaning up the chassis, put some rust converter, nothing bad in the way of rust, probably because it was a fire engine & sat in a shed most of it's life. I still have to flip it over & do the underside. Then the next thing to do is to paint some primer & satin black top coats. still deciding if I should try and spray something inside the chassis - I thought maybe some fisholene or similar - any suggestions? Steering relay was a pain to get out - took about 3 hours - wasn't rusted in just full of fine dust locking in place - plenty of wd40 & a bit of heat.

Steve

Hello from Brisbane.

The relay replacement is a job that I am probably going to have confront one of these days - bit like lining up for polio shots years before the oral vaccines were introduced. As you stood in line awaiting your turn, you hoped the earlier kids would come back saying it wasn't too bad........

Three hours is at the better end of the spectrum from some accounts.

Penetrol from Flood products is what I'm going to be using to do the inside of my chassis. An excellent product that comes and a tin as well as a spray can. I think it was Chazza on the forum who did a year long test of rust proofing products and Penetrol was the only one with an unchanged surface.

You beat me to it Korg!

Penetrol - unbelievably good, unlike the other pretenders :D

Nice chassis Steve - is it going to be a fire engine again?

Cheers Charlie

thanks Korg & Chazza for the info on penetrol - I see you can buy it at Bunnings so I will go a have a look.

Yep - it's going to be red fire engine again.

The front chassis cross member is different to the one on my '59 SWB. Mine is a flat top all the way across (the same width as the steering relay mounting area), it doesn't have the step in it. Is the step specific to the fire engine?

NO - not specific to a fire engine - it had a holden engine in it - so they cut the cross member to fit the radiator further forward. I am putting in a land rover motor but not going to change it back, my only hope is I don't have trouble at rego.

Well done there!
Just looking at thos image:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2013/03/479.jpg

Has this vehicle had an impact on the front left?
There looks to be a chassis repair just behind and above the shock absorber mount.

A 1962 2a I'm restoring has a repair at nearly the same point though not nearly as neat:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2013/03/480.jpg

did you have any issues with chassis straightness at all?

Hi all,
thanks for your comments.:)

Incisor - I put in the engine I could get @ $200 complete - the engine number is 251 something so I think it's a 1962 which was good enough for me (don't know any different). The car was built with a 2L but I don't have the money or time to wait for one of those. When I got it, it had a 186.

Korg - no damage there - it's just the paint reflection, it was half painted with rust converter.

Grey Ghost - Your grey Ghost looks good & the new project will look fantastic because you put so much effort into cleaning & painting - I don't have that much patience. I am sick of cleaning & haven't started cleaning, cutting back & painting the panels yet. Just starting on the bulkhead now, got it sand blasted.

Drifter - One day - in about a year I will be able to drive it to your side of town & visit. one day, some day, maybe - if only !!!! I will get there but boy is it slow work. Stripped down the steering box last Sunday & gave it a good clean. Ball bearing look OK & not much crap inside.

bye for now.

Hi Steve,
Where did you get the paint for your engine? I have been looking for some duck egg blue for my 2.25 but haven't had much luck.

Thanks

Jonathan

Jondavball,
I went to Allard paints in Isa st. & gave them the code from the sticky thread at the top of this section. british standard colour - BS4800 or BS5252 16C33.
Allard's said that 2 pack is good to use on engines but I won't know till it's been running. Knowing my luck it will all peel off :o.
