Hi people,
I'm looking at Mud tyre options for the Defender in next month or so and have a limited budget to spend and want a good, fairly cheap set of 285 75 R16 muddies.

I have spotted these on evilbay: 4 X 285/75/16 AMERICAN HERCULES TRAIL DIGGER M/T MUD TYRES, MAKE IN USA | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/4-X-285-75-16-AMERICAN-HERCULES-TRAIL-DIGGER-M-T-MUD-TYRES-MAKE-USA-/300670065952?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4601551d20)

I have read so good stuff about them on Jeeps forums and was just wondering if anyone here runs them on their Landy and what they think of them.

I am open to all suggestions too. :)

Cheers

Pete

you would need to confirm the actual size of the tyres they are selling as one of the photos on ebay states 33/12.5/15:o

Hi Pete, this is about ten years ago so things may well have changed, but I ran a set of the Hercules tyres on my 110 County and was quite disappointed with the mileage I got from them. They were the cheapest tyres available at the time but were not worth it in the long run as I got less than half the life of the previous major brand tyres. Cheers, 130man.

If you have another $160 you could get Maxxis Bighorns, which from all reports are very good (I'm about to fit some to my Disco).
285-75-16 MAXXIS BIGHORN MUD TERRAINS A SET OF 4 TYRES | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/285-75-16-MAXXIS-BIGHORN-MUD-TERRAINS-SET-4-TYRES-/250880313936?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a69a1ca50)

These are my other choice, haha. Tell me how they go when you get them on.

Oh I'm also running 15x7 (I think could be 8) rims with 31" and looking at some 16x8 -25 offset. What are the pros and cons of 16x8 vs 15x8 steel rims??

We are running a set of Hercules on one of our work Defenders.
Disappointing to say the least, with crap grip, great chunks torn out of them and exorbitant wear rates.
If they are the same brand as the ones you are looking at...RUN AWAY!!!!

Thanks for this info!! I am hoping that the tyre compound is better than it was 10 years ago :) I think they are manufactured and are a sub brand of Cooper tyres and are who also make kumho.

16" rims will give you better clearance around the braking components.

15" tyres are generally cheaper to purchase.

I won't open a can of worms regarding which is better or what size tyres to run on what size rims.

I'm not so worried about noise, just the wear really. Lets face it a 300tdi is pretty noisy (in a good way!!) Do you know how many kms he has on them and how worn they are??

Cheers

There is a review on them when they were tested in Moab on their website. Hercules Tire and Rubber Company | full line of passenger, SUV, light truck, medium and commercial truck tires (http://www.herculestire.com/) for those who are interested!

So, are they any good? Did they go on standard Disco 2 rims?

Sorry for the late reply.
They are on standard Disco 1 rims but I think they're the same, aren't they?
They are AWESOME. The amount of grip I'm getting is phenomenal.
Go for 'em.
