I have a '59 SWB (allocation book lists it as 11/59) and whilst the front badge has mismatched screws, the rear is rivetted on and I have no reason to think it has ever been removed, but cannot guarantee it!.

I also have a '59 SWB Command Recon, and again no reason to believe the badges are not original.

Both these vehicles have "Solihull Warwickshire" badges........

My Command Recon was brought home for parts, and I very much doubt that I'll ever do anything with it. It has some parts that seem quite rare, bridge plates, weird inverted exhaust manifold etc. but some major bits have gone (gearbox, seatbase, roof etc.) and as I'm already working on a civvy '59 SWB the CR is about the least likely resoration candidate of all the vehicles in my "car park".

On that basis I'd be happy to swap the Solihull nameplates on it for a Zenith carb adapter if you can find one...!

done deal, i have one in my parts cupboard i am sure...

thankyou...

the inverted manifold is the one it should have .. does it still have the weight and spring on the exhaust gas pivot ?

Let me know if you've got one and we can pm or email postal addresses!

If the weight is the small lump on the shaft (feels like four sides of differing lengths, about the size of a 20c coin but perhaps 10mm thick), rather than anything else, then it seems to be there. Hard to tell without knowing what I'm looking for, especially as the vehicle is too hot to lean on at the moment and the manifold is covered with suspicious looking spiders webs!!!

My civvy '59 has a more normal manifold with a downward pointing exit, and the weight on it doesn't seem to be the same - but I'm trying to compare the two things by feel with a couple of hours in between!

From what I can gather from web searches, the change happened about 59-60, and through that period I'm guessing (British industry being what it was/is) that they used whatever was on hand at the time. Certainly it did not appear to line up with the II to IIa "change", and there is anecdotal evidence of vehicles with different plates on each end during the 59-60 period.

I'd guess that any attempt to pin it down to a month, or even a year, would be doomed to failure! However from my own vehicles I can fairly safely say that there were both military and civilian '59 SWB's that sported Solihull badges.
