Gday All,
Can someone tell me if there is an easy way to identify if the 4sp gearbox in my XR is a top loader.. its not the original gearbox and I believe it is , but would just like to corfirm it is..
Many thanks,
Cheers Ean

The top loader has reverse gear away from you and down to the left, Like a VW, the Borg Warner single rail like a LT77 and LT85, UP to the left.

Thanks Justin, will have to have a look but think its the left and up, so doesn't seem as tho its a top loader.
Do you know if with a V8 bell housing the borg warner bolts up to a 302/351 w or cl ?

Ean, I have only experience with Clevo but I'd imagine a Windsor pattern would be the same, even though the blocks are vastly different.
Someone more 'Ford expert' will chime in soon for sure:)
Sounds like a nice project...

If you car see (or feel) the top of the box, there is a generally flat pressed metal plate on top giving access to the box. The selector mechanisim is mounted on the very end of the extension housing with the linkages running down the LHS of the box.

Ford top loader gearbox has a sheetmetal plate bolted to the top and a gear linkage setup is on the passenger side of the box, if it has an aluminium extension on top of the box with the gearstick it is not a top Loader, a pic would be nice, regards Frank.

Its still in the car and its not that easy to get under and take a pic, as I have stuff around the car atm, but am sure its not a top loader, thanks for the info Frank.

If you undo the boot around the gear stick you will see either an open shift mech (top loader) or an alloy shift housing with a single shift rod (BW single rail) and a big nylon nut (holding the stick in) that is notorious for stripping. I see brass replacements are available on ebay these days.

Ean, from underneath on the passenger side there will be 3 levers, one shorter, with steel rods going back to the gear change stick mechanism mounted at the rear of the box, if you can't get a look from the top, Regards Frank.

If its not a toploader,grab a T5 out of an EA/EB falcon.
The T5 is a direct bolt up replacement for a single rail.I did a conversion in a strong XE EFi SPac wagon(200kph in 4th,select 5th and it still went some more:twisted::twisted::twisted:).6cyl/V8 boxes interchange;););););)
You will appreciate 5th up there:D:D:D:D:D:D.From memory I was able to retain the original 4 speed tailshaft(same gearbox length)
Not as strong as the Top Loader,MUCH CHEAPER,Dont be tricked into a XE/XF 5 speed, they are weak and will not handle the V8,the T5 will unless you are a TYRE SHREDDING HOON.

Andrew the 6 cyl. and v8 will not interchange, the spigot shaft is different, a V8 will not fit the 6 and vice versa, I was told they were interchangable, I have one of each in the back of one of my landies. I was hoping I could swap spigot shafts but not possible, Regards Frank.
