View Full Version : Jacking the D3

Gday All,

Decided to replace the rear brake pads today and jacked the D3 as per the manual says and my god the car goes up a bloody long way before the tyre comes off the ground, and with the lean on the car it would not surprise me if it somehow puts the wheels out of balance.

I did as the manual say's, offroad height and jack on the chassis rail hole.

I would have thought under the wishbone or whatever you call it would have been a far better spot.

Where does everyone else jack the car from. ?

Cheers Ean

I've only ever done mine as per the manual, and it does seem to take a fair bit of jacking before the wheel comes free...but it works - so I'll keep on doing it that way.

From the jacking point as per the manual, but using a bottle jack I bought for the job. Lives under the 3rd row of seats.
..............and yes, you jack it up and think............hhmmmm...that just doesn't look right!

Hi , you must remember the following, it has a sequence.
Select off road height. If not in off road height the jack struggles
Switch off.
KEEP A DOOR OPEN, ANY DOOR, VERY VERY IMPORTANT.If not it will keep on raising itself.
Chock any wheel.
Insert jack into hole.
And VOILA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The stupid jack suddenly works, only a few cranks the wheel is free.
Remove and refit.
Start car,
CLOSE ALL DOORS
Car will go into extended mode
Remove jack!!!!!

The trick I have learnt (no LLAMS) is to select off-road height, leave a door open so it won't try to self level. Place the jack in the appropriate spot, raise the jack until it is just starting to lift the car then get back in and close the door, now select normal height, the car will try to lower but sees an obstruction (the jack) and goes to extended. Now get out leaving the door open and jack from that height.

I couldn't be bothered with all that, I use the D3 coil jack and jacking point, much easier.

Hi Baz - could you elaborate please ... I've only owned one D3 and am not familiar with the coiler - seen a few but haven't crawled around under one ... do they have a different jack ?
cheers

Yes they do have a different jack, see your manual page 293 for details as they also specify different jacking points too.

Yep, it's a 2 stage bottle jack, wind up type.

Yep, it's a 2 stage bottle jack, wind up type.
And it is also a 'crap jack' really.
I also carry a two stage 10T hydraulic jack that will slip under D3 coiler.

I wish this mob Quaddro Technologies - WORLD'S SAFEST 4x4 Off-Road Vehicle Recovery Mechanism. (http://www.quaddrotech.com/index.html) would hurry up with the release of their jack ... supposed to be soon, could be just the thing for our D3/4s......
cheers.
