View Full Version : 200tdi into series - what wiring?

So how would one do the wiring on a Series 3 (ex-6cyl) with a 200TDi in it. I've not done it or even got the motor but just trying to understand what is needed before I take the plunge. Can all the Series instruments still be used? what about the glow plugs and any additional engine indicators? maybe they are just not needed?

Glow plugs aren't needed on a Tdi unless you live in alpine regions. Many don't bother wiring them up in AU.

The most important wire is an ignition wire to work the IP cutout.

The only (relevant) senders on the motor are oil pressure (light) and water temp (guage). The light will of course work fine, the guage may work, but how will you know it is accurate? TDI guages are useless, so you may as well swap to a VDO guage and sender when doing the conversion.

glow plugs/heater plugs aren't needed on the 200tdi, mine started last winter without problems during our freeze where i had at least 3inches of ice on my pond for about 4 weeks, it was damnably cold :eek:

being as you have a petrol landrover the low tension wire that feeds the ignition will control the stop solenoid on the injector pump

just extend the starter solenoid trip wire down to the starter motor on the 200tdi starter motor and move the battery leads from the remote solenoid down to the solenoid on the starter motor, don't forget to connect the thick alternator feed/charge wire to the battery lead, pick up your main harness feed from the same point

your biggest problems is going to be the bellhousing bolt pattern is different from the 4pot pattern so it won't bolt straight up to the TDI, plus the 6pot is several inches longer which moves the gearbox back in the chassis by about 4 inches, meaning you'll have to work out engine to chassis mounts

you may also find difficulties with manifold and turbo clearances around your passenger footwell, 300tdi manifolds/turbo "might" help but i can't say for sure or you may want to get Defender turbo and manifolds

as for guages, the only one that you need to sort out will be the temperature one which is relatively easy as one of the Defender petrol engines uses an adaptor for the sensor which can be screwed into the 200tdi and you can then screw the Series temperature sensor into that (i can't remember the part number sorry)

i've not done this conversion myself in a sixpot but i'm certain someone on the Series2 club forum has (PatnRob i think) so it might be worth you putting a shout out on there for guidance on the trickier bits, we do have 200 and 300tdi specific sections in the workshop there with plenty of folks beside myself that have done the TDI swaps

If you mean the 2.3 and 2.5 petrol 110/defenders, none of them made it to Australia.
