Hi all,

Just did an oil change on my 92 disco tdi.
It has travelled just shy of 345k's.
Had a look at the used oil-from the sump and the filter.
From the filter there was the slightest(about 1/4 the size of a 1c coin) of what appeared to be water mixed with oil(streaky oil lighter colour).Sump oil no difference in colour.:D
Plus it is starting to use just the slightest amount of coolant.
Dipstick has been its usual colour...black :p

From what I've read on the 300 tdi(mate has one),they need the headgasket done roughly every 250-300k's.
Is it the same for the 200tdi?

Cheers

with that many k's and seeing as you cant get new replacement heads for the 200tdi I would certainly change the gasket and take the opertunity to inspect the head.

My gasket recently popped on a 200tdi with similar k's. It leaked some combustion at the back, not much else to notice but when the head came off there were cracks between the valves. Rekon it was caused by high EGT's

Renew the gasket and you can check if the head is still good/needs a skim, put it back on and get an EGT gauge if you havent already got one.

I have a 300TDI and not long ago I noticed it had used a small amount of coolant (which wasn't normal before then). A few weeks later it overheated with a leaking/blown head gasket. In retrospect I should have changed the head gasket as soon as I noticed the coolant disappear. (Assuming there is no coolant leaking through a hose, etc).

Manic, can you tell me what is the difference between a 200TDi head and a 300TDi head, thanks in advance, Regards Frank

They reckon that the steel gaskets are better than the composite ones??
May be an option for you

I looked into putting a 300tdi head on a 200tdi but it is more of a conversion process than a straight swap.

POS on landyzone explained it best:

From original post: who actually has a 300tdi head on a 200tdi block!? - Land Rover Zone (http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f48/who-actually-has-300tdi-head-200tdi-block-171270.html)

A 300 tdi cylinder head WILL bolt straight onto a 200tdi block but you need to understand that there are quite a few differences and you will need to make a few changes to make the engine run correctly. The first thing to consider is the differences:

1) different rocker shaft assembly
2) different type of two-stage Bosch injectors
3) different injector pipes
4) different piston crowns

Before you even think about putting a 300tdi cylinder head on a 200tdi block you will have to be prepared to take the pistons out and swap the piston heads for those to suit a 300tdi. The combustion chamber in the 300tdi piston crown is in a different position to that of a 200tdi to compensate for the angle that the 300tdi injectors enter the head. If you use 200tdi pistons, the combustion chamber is in a completely different place and the diesel will not burn properly.

You will also need to have a complete 300tdi cylinder head including the rocker shaft and injectors etc. they are not interchangeable. The injector pipes have a different size union at the injectors and because the 300tdi injectors have two different opening pressures, you will either need to source a non-EDC injection pump from a 300tdi, or have the pump recall rated at a diesel injection specialists. Ofcourse, by this point, it would work out more worthwhile swapping the entire engine for a 300.

Update...:D

Took the beast down to my local mechanic yesterday afternoon so he'd have it first thing this morning while engine still cold to put pressure test on cooling system.:)
Finally found that the top heater hose had the smallest leak where the rubber meets the firewall.:p:D
Tightened it up roughly 1 full turn, maybe a bit more and hopefully that will be all thats needed.

cheers

Good find. I replaced that hose on my Disco on the weekend, but could not get the clamp to do up tight so had to replace it.

What I will also say is do the clamps up with a small socket or spanner. (Need the clamps with a hex head). You will get it MUCH tighter than with a screwdriver. In my opinion, a screwdriver is not adequate to tighten properly.
