View Full Version : What to call the new Defender - if not "Defender"?

In the new defender/pajero thread there is mention that the next iteration of our beloved vehicle MIGHT not carry the name "Defender" any longer.

So without panicking - let's for a moment assume this is so.

What good alternative names can you think of?

We've had County
then Defender
then ....?

Well in the spirit of Landrover Marketing these days it could end up Defender 2, i think that is likely

In fact the question was couched, "what would you think if the next model wasn't called Defender?"
So it seems they are looking for a name that gets away from the notion of building vehicles for armies and building vehicles for people that they can use with all the capabilities we expect and a bit more comfort than soldiers are provided.

then ....?In the UK the name County was actually a trim level and was available in the late SIII, like the previous DeLux trim level of the S1/SII/SIIa and early SIII.
What name instead? Has to reflect strength, capability and reliability, not be militaristic and work in multiple countries and languages particularly English.
We cant use Titanic, Britanic and Olympic is Greek.
Drover is out, so is Stockman, Brumby, Cherokee, Pajero, Cayenne, Tuareg, Stallion, Colt, Mustang, Puma, Renegade, Titan is too close to Triton.
Should we go back to "Land Rover Series" making the next offering "Series VII"?
(Series 1, SII, SIIa, SIII, 90/110=Series IV, Defender 90/110/130=Series V, Defender Puma= Series VI)

I was under the impression that part of the reason for calling them a "Defender" was to acknowledge the long association the Land Rover had with a number of armies.
Since that role seems to be in decline, there seems to be less reason to continue that name.
I know! Lets call them "Land Rovers". :D

I suppose it depends how it ends up - Lounge - might be appropriate, or the Land Rover Vaucluse :eek:

 Land Rover 110,
Land Rover 130That's a bit radical isn't it?
With all the oil they return to the ground, perhaps Land Rover Valdez? :wasntme:

You seem to be assuming that they will have the same wheelbase as current models. :D
On the other hand, you might just be aware of the fact that the wheelbase figures are not exact and that Land Rover is reluctant to change. :D:D

When trying to work out the current "Series", wouldn't it go
Series I
Series II
Series IIA
Series III
Series IV (90/110/127 2.25TD, V8 and Isuzu)
Series V (Defender 90/110/130 V8, Tdi200, Tdi300)
Series VI (Defender 90/110/130 Td5)
Series VII (Defender 90/110/130 TDCI)
Some people even seperate the Tdi200/300, but at best I think it would be Series VA, as a minor revision.

On that subject, I know of a fellow who liked the 90 and Perenties so much he built some Pretendie 90's by cutting down Range Rovers, only problem was that he thought the 90 was 90" wheelbase so that's what he built! :o

If they don't get that soundproofing right soon, the term "Deafener" might be considered as a suitable and descriptive, worthwhile proposition.

I like "Offender" but it will never catch on on......

To be honest I dont think you can change it from anything other than "Defender" if thats what you are upgrading it to.

Otherwise call it something completely different, if that is what it is.....

In reality the name will be decided by a group of people (on 6 figure salaries) who are not in touch with the history of the vehicle. Plus there will be focus groups involving members of the public who have never even heard of Land Rover.
You also have to consider the 'green' aspect so the name will probably involve saving the planet in some way......
There will be a separate group to decide on the new colours and come up with stupid names for them.
I don't think Victoria Beckham will design the interior for the Defender replacement so it will probably be someone a bit more 'down market'.

Seeing the DC100 is for the USA market yuppies, the colours???? colors should have some Yankee names.
Rhode Island Red,
Yellowstone,
Californian Cyan,
Wyoming White,
Great Lake Green,

How about the Land Rover GreenMotion.
Like the VW BlueMotion but in LR green, the 'save the planet' brigade will buy it because it has the word 'green' in the name....
Arthur, I can just imagine the tweed seat covers designed by Prince Philip. Hang on a moment, the covers in my old defender are tweed.....

I always thought "Defender" was named because it represented the defender of what landies had always represented. The whole stalwart, resolute thing...
Yes, Land Rover is a good name, come to think of it....

"GAYLANDER", I thought we were on this forum because we have a common interest, not to bag people out because they have a different sexual preference to your own.
I am not Gay but I am sure there are people who participate in this forum that may well be, and they could well be offended by such tiny minded comments.
Lets keep it about Defenders and include everyone.

Diana & Col. Coleman,
you forgot the S111 stage 1 and
the green motion would be a lot more desirable than a brown motion,
but the performance of the disc/drum combination on my 110, makes me want to change it's name from defender to rear-ender - but that may attract the wrong sort of interest.

Aww c'mon, are you kidding !!! No need to be so precious, nothing to do with political correctness but, Gay's & Lesbians are 'out there' , want and almost have equal rights , not hiding in the closet and I can tell you they have a lot thicker skin than you or me. So Im going to say right here and now that the RR Evoque, and the FL are as Gay as the DC100 so I don't have an issue with the name Gaylander . Its nothing to be ashamed and no need to tread on eggshells !!

I give you the Land Rover Flaccid. Too soft to tackle the Cape or Simpson, but plenty tough enough to cope with shopping centre car park speed humps (just). This car has inspired me to keep my TD5 defender forever. I'm serious. I would buy a new Defender if they produced something worth buying. They lost me when they dropped the engine size to 2.2L. As they say, there's no replacement for displacement!

Imagine if LR could enlist the help of a former spice girl to help design a new Land Rover. With all that hype you wouldn't need to worry about off-roading at all... you could forget low range and it could even come in a 2WD version! Then we could have the Land Rover Wannabe. Oh, wait... they've already done that. Damn!
