Defender Td5 gearbox chatter and heavy whirring sounds

The gearbox on a 2004 Defender Td5 110 with 320,000 kms chatters in neutral with the clutch pedal released. The Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) is designed to dampen and eliminate or reduce gearbox chatter when in neutral. Therefore, does the chattering indicate that the DMF is failing and causing the noise?

Also, when the vehicle is driven, there is a heavy whirring sound. Does this noise indicate that the gearbox primary and layshaft bearings are failing?

check the oil and the mag plug...
if its queter in 4th than the others the bearings are on the way out.

ID be tipping bearings are on the way out....

chuck it in neutral on the Tcase and check all the gears,

the gears lash noise should be, noisiest to quietest

2nd, 5th R
1st 3rd
4th.

to limit wear on the box try to use 4th as much as possible. The fact that the noise goes away when you Hold the clutch in (and Im tipping that doing it with the Tcase in neutral it will fade away rather than stop instantly) means its in the box.

My box on an older but lower mileage defender makes that chattering noise when in neutral and stationary. I think it is the bearing on the clutch just touching as the engine turns over. As soon as you load the bearing up and still in neutral it shuts up. I don't think these symptoms would alter by playing with the TC gear selector. I think it is the clutch thrust bearing bouncing around and transmitting the vibrations into the box gearbox.

if the noise was the same in all gears, youd be on the money (and with the description ID be thinking clutch plate rattle), sadly its not.
