puma surging

Hi all,

just wanted to see if anyone else has this issue.

to set the scene..
At around 25kph in second gear approx. 2000 revs and going up hill

if I try to maintain this speed I get surging, and it becomes more vigorous until I either and accelerate more or less. This is really annoying and LR keep saying there is nothing wrong and it is normal.

my 2010 defender goes in for its 90k service on Tuesday and I will get them to check again, But I need to get this sorted within the next 10k or I am out of warranty.

So is this normal? Also does anyone know of somewhere I can get a second opinion from a LR specialists on the Gold Coast or in Brisbane that I can then report to dealer if there is an issue?

I get something similar in my Puma.
If I accelerate hard in second gear (3000rpm) and change up into third - it surges.
This behavious is not consistent and probably happens more often when the engine is still warming up. It only seems to happen from 2nd to 3rd.

Could be a drive by wire thing. My aprilia bike does similar to my puma. Only backing off before clutching when changing down from midle rev range

Sounds like its the EGR, however do you have any fault codes ? Regardiing the EGR it does a bit of that during normal operating strategy.

I second the EGR theory. I've heard of this sort of behaviour from the EGR valve on a number of vehicles, not just Land Rover.

I have a friend who had this with his new Nissan Navara. He tried everything to have it fixed, including having it towed to the dealer and "standing over" the service manager wearing dark glasses with his "guns" bulging :). He ended up blanking off the EGR himself and problem solved.

3rd the EGR valve theory - take it to MR Automotive if you need an independent good opinion....

x4 for the EGR, you could try unplugging it and going for a drive to see if the problem goes away.

If you accelerate hard and then change the unburnt fuel will go down the pipe as the rev's drop which is a big no no for polution so new engines hold the power on for a second to burn th fuel which feels just like surging.I'm not saying it's the problem but the style of driving that you described sounds like when it would most likely happen. had a few do it, and non of them have yet to be the EGR valve,

most problem is brake switch or fuse blown for the brake lights,
