View Full Version : How hard is it to do the timing belt of V6 Freeloader?

My cousin called me the other day regarding the timing belt on his V6 Freelander. I've done plenty of Asian front wheel drives (Vtec Honda V6, Toyota Corollas and plenty of Hyundai's) and a Pajero V6, but apparently the Freeloader has front and rear timing belts?

Would love comments/feedback on weather it is much more complicated or reasonably achievable in the back yard? Any special Land Rover specific tools required for the job?

Yes the V6 freelander has 3 timing belts. the main timing belt runs the intake cams and the exhaust cams are run off the back of the intake cams. You may ask why would you do it like that, but if you looked at this engine in a Rover 75 it would not fit any other way

There are service tools to do the job as they have no timing marks. I have done the job with no service tools, you just need to make your own marks.

Highly recommend changing the water pump as it is ran off the timing belt. Also you need to remove one of the cam sprockets (per bank) to fit the rear belts as there is no tensioner. You must replace the cam sprocket bolt that is removed.

All and all it is not that bad of a job, a bit fiddly but is achievable in the back yard.

just reading this stuff all the time got me nervouse eh, my v6 freelander has 133K on the clock..

took it to a landrover mechanic to ask him a price he recons 2k for the job..

i said do u think it needs doing , he replied well with 130k on the clock yours must of been done cause he never seen one go that far before without letting loose .

but this would still mean i need to do again but at what k range i dunno ..

Yeah, my KV6 has almost 120k on it so it is due for a T-Belt change, the cheapest quote I have had for both a service and T-Belt change is
"$1250 to $1400 depending on what needs doing". I read into that as meaning doing a basic belt change and sevice. The other quotes I received are in the region of $2,000.:o

I will have the water pump changed as Woko has mentioned before the KV6 is prone to coolant leak at the water pump!!!;)

I am very nervous about going to a mechanic with no LandRover experience.

I got the wifes done recently and ordered the parts from the UK. Cost was 200GBP, including delivery, for the full timing belt kit and a new water pump.

You could try a Hyundai specialist as the engine was fitted to the early Carnivals - I think the engine killed all them off in the first few years.

I think Hyundai would rather forget about that experiment.:o I still remember the bad press!!!;)Actually, if my memory serves me correctly, the vehicle was the Kia Carnivale
