I have tried to find it on my D4 12my with hi-line audio. I have even looked up the handbook and have gone through all the menus but no success.
Possibly a dealer option???
When I get home from this place I will have another look in the system to make sure.
Has anybody else got it or is Oz missing out on the future of digital radio, as I have noticed in several radio websites they are now broadcasting in digital.

I have it on my D4.

I have dab on....but did not know what it did. I know that I receive details about the tunes being played, but I have this on my 2008 touareg.....just thought this was the norm these days with radios.

I think it's under settings in the radio menu.

Yes I assumed that this was pretty much a standard these days and did not even think to ask the dealer about it when buying the car. I was a bit miffed to say the least when I discovered that there was no DAB installed. After a bit of research I found that Land Rover do not support the latest version of DAB (DAB+) and so do not install it for the Australian market.

Here is another thread on this:

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/general-chat/123876-discovery-4-dab-radio.html

discotwinturbo, you say you have it in D4? what model is it and is it a standard LR system? Perhaps there is a way to enable it?

On the 2010,2011 models, there was no support for DAB, as Australia decided to use a different standard to most of the rest of the world. Perhaps they've contracted out for the 2012 models? I didn't think so, but you never know .....

Cheers,

Gordon

Land Rover does not support it new car buyers in countries that have a DAB+ broadcast. DAB+ is in Ireland, Australia, Norway, Germany and Switzerland all with good Land Rover sales. DAB+ is the preferred medium from the old DAB used in UK. The web is awash with Land rover fans trying to get their vehicles changed to receive DAB+, Median the supplier of the sound systems to Rover and Jaguar Jaguar have the same system but it is programmed with DAB+ to its customers.

From all reports the ICE for MY13 is the same as MY12. Does that mean that a software update would make these systems capable of receiving DAB+?? Considering that LR are asking $800+ for DAB+ for the MY13's it probably won't be a cheap option if available for the MY12's.

When I bought my 2011 RRS expected it to have DAB at the price of the vehicle as its pretty old technology now.
Complained to LR Australia and got a string of emails saying it was coming.
Pretty crook that a socalled luxo vehicle doesn't have it:mad:

This is RDS (Radio Data System) that allows small amounts of data (song name, title etc) to be sent and read by the radio.

DAB+ is Digital Audio Broadcasting and means you will find you have many more stations available to you and reception/audio quality is much better.

It is now only just being made available in MY13 Disco's and rufusking above reports it is costing $800. I'm not seeing LRA giving out free firmware upgrades :(

I saw a song title the other day when I accidentally turned the radio on.

Yep - the mid to high spec head units have RDS on them. Not all radio stations broadcast RDS though - been a while since I looked though!

So we expect a firmware update to add DAB+ radio, without any additional hardware? ROFLMAO

Good luck! :wasntme:

I was thinking the same - I mentioned all this in a thread nearly 2 years ago, no one was particularly interested then ............

DAB+ was (and still is) the "beta video" of the digital wars. Less than 20% of the countries providing digital radio use DAB+. It isn't likely that LR or any other European marque outside of Germany will go out of their way to provide support for such a small user-base. And there's no phasing out of analogue radio driving uptake, so no one's really missing out on anything outside of a couple of the inner-city CBD's.

Storm ........... tea-cup

Cheers,

Gordon

Assuming the head units we have in Australia came with the UK DAB tuner - it is feasible that they could be upgraded via a firmware update. They would however still need a separate DAB+ antenna and coax cable - at a minimum, as it uses a totally different band to AM/FM in Australia (174 – 230 MHz).

RE: DAB+ Radio for Land Rovers
Hi Just a quick up date, Land Rover are ignoring all requests to even discuss the DAB+ support in Australia. funny though t the Jaguar with the same system is programmed for DAB+. If you hold the "Range Rover" emblem on the Meridian system for 8 to 10 seconds then the "valet" button for 8-10 seconds you get into the system set up screen. The system has been built as you can see from the new screen it was built for Jaguar/Range Rover so its obviously has different Firmware to what vehicle it is installed into. I have no issues to pay for the Firmware upgrade and the only way to do this is keep pestering your dealer and Land Rover Australia and see how keen they are to sell you a new vehicle in 3 years....... And prove they do listener to it customers.

But we need more to people to sign to make this happen

Perhaps true but how come you can buy many brands of portable DAB radios for around $100. Technology can't be that complex or manufactuers wouldn't bother for the Aussie Market and clearly the consumer market is big enough. Around 1 million sold in Aus already I hear.

FWIW, confirmed that the DAB+ is a $850 option for the MY13. Can't recall if all systems can be upgraded to the DAB+, or you need the Hi ICE or Premium ICE.

Glad I didn't hang out for the Digital Radio in the 2013 model, there is a way around it.

My Iphone has digital radio (app) which gets digital radio globally, so I can stream it directly to the car either via bluetooth or Aux port, and bingo we have digital radio in the D4.

Cheers

Good suggestion but I'm too old and backward thinking to come to terms with streaming internet radio on my phone. I don't have a huge data allowance and I perceive that streaming the radio would eat it up. Also while my car (when and if it eventually arrives at my dealers) will bluetooth musc I reckon that eats up battery.

Not as bad as you think James. App is Tunein radio and does not chew up that much data. You have 1000s of local and international stations also well known ones.
In relation to battery like anything you do on your phone it's going to get used, however I have an in car charger via the 12v socket, step out of your comfort zone and try it, you know you want to...

Hope you get your car soon mate.

I stream both Pandora and tune in and they don't chew a large amount of data. You do have to have your iPhone plugged in though as 3g uses a fair bit of power.

This doesn't work where you can't get data, whereas I suspect digital radio will go further. Not that it matter that much, as personally I don't use the radio that much, but thought that would be nice to complete the package.

Just trolling through disco4.com and came across this thread.

DISCO4.COM - View topic - MY11 HSE - Shark Finn Help needed ASAP please (http://www.disco4.com/forum/topic75788.html)

It appears that the DAB antenna is the shark fin on the D4 in the UK/EU. DAB+ may not be as simple as a software update. It will be interesting to see what antenna is fitted to the MY13 with DAB+.

phl, you will get mobile data far beyond DAB+. DAB+ range is very limited. In AU we would be far better off with the US satellite radio system (Sirius, XM), even if it is subscription based. But what's our chance of someone doing that for a population base of 20+ million?

rufusking is right about DAB+ transmissions being weak. I live in Mt Lawley, just five minutes north of the Perth CBD, and I'm up on the hill. My DAB+ clock radio works but it shows the weakest possible signal.

Bit disappointed in DAB+ in my area, it's great in itself but I have to have the aerial on full extension and on my bedside table I reckon it looks pretty lame.

So is the consensus now that DAB+ is a useless option, after all the calls to have it in the D4?

Well I wouldn't go so far as to say useless. There are a lot of station options on the digital band, just don't look to it for being the only radio option you could ever want.

There's a good chance that a car driving around with a proper aerial installed would pick up a better signal than my bedside clock radio.
