The other day we had some visitors in our short little street (16 houses) probably because it is a no through road it was considered a safe place to park a sedan and largish box trailer for the day.
Out of the trailer rumbled a couple of tricked up quad bikes that were fitted with normal car wheels (apparently required for road registration) and a number of cameras, computers, GPSs, antennae and all kinds of weird nerd like paraphernalia that I had no idea about whatsoever. Went over to have a yarn to the operators (as one does) and found out that they belong to a Company that is chartered by the local council to patrol all the footpaths with their little buggies, using laser technology to find all the cracks crevices, tripping points, holes and depressions in the footpaths.

Great way to fill in the day I reckon riding around the area on the footpaths on a modified quad bike and getting paid for it as well.
I don't know how large an area they covered in the 6 hours or so that their car was parked here but I dare say they covered a fair bit.

Looks like WorkCover hasn't seen them or there'd be a roll bar!

There's a mob here in Emu Plains that runs them. I've seen them come in to their factory unit past the coffee shop/chocolatier that we frequent daily.

They also run Transit or Merc Sprinters with the the same stuff. I'll try to get some pics -- Infrastructure Management Group - About Us (http://www.imgpl.com.au/)

Google should stick one of their cameras on top so we can get a street view of all the walking paths. It would be good info to have I think, you could plan jogging routes, virtual walks around botanical gardens etc etc.

I suspect the road tyres are to reduce bounce for the application rather than registration. I have seen a number of these registered on normal tyres (usually owned by council parks and gardens), although this may vary from state to state.

What a fascinating insight into a truly different business! Love it, thank you for the heads up, which I've found most interesting. :D

You have FOOTPATHS?

We in the Central Coast would love tarmac which is less than 80% patches. Kerbing would be great.

good to see our rates and taxes going to good use......I must be a bit slow and it is only the last few decades when the earth became uneven and having some potential for a trip hazard.....give me a break!

I live 10 minutes drive from the Brisbane CBD. The subdivision dates from 1932. We do not have footpaths, kerb and channeling is on one side of the street and on the other for about 1/3 of the streets length. Whilst several blocks in my end, including mine, were subdivided and street boundaries made at the streets surveyed permanent level, the road has never been lowered to the permanent level. At my place the street is some four feet above the permanent level. Some years ago surveyors came around, and afterwards water mains, telephone cables, and the overhead electricity cables were moved to a new alignment. We were told the street was to be widened and straightened to remove a dangerous narrow s-bend. Nothing else has happened. There is now a fire hydrant half way down a steep slope in bushland on the proposed new alignment. The current alderman has no knowledge or record of the proposed works. This is your tax dollar hard at work for the people.
