Hay folks

Looking at purchasing a 98 V8 Disco....Mainly be used on highways (live in a rural area) and weekend trips away...
Couple of Questions:

R they as thirsty as what everyone says?
Ball park figure of km per tank on the open road?
With regular upkeep...Avg engine life span?
Have noticed a few with paint fading....Is this common?
Any major concerns?
Do they leak oil (once again like everyone says)?
Importantly..R they worth purchasing

I have a Disco 1 that I can rely on getting 500+ km per tank, I think it would do 600 on the highway but I'm not game to push it. It has no oil leaks but does leak from the power steering. At 320,500 km the bottom end, cam and lifters are original; the heads were reconned 5,000ish km ago.
Bare in mind they are not a racing buggy and drive accordingly, you will get long life and acceptable fuel consumption.

Thanks for the input....my wife says i drive like an old grandfather.....so expecting it to drive like V8 supacar is not on my mind....

Do you know anything about the paint fading, and is there any specific things i should check for when inspecting...... Am looking in the low 100's from a km perspective...

The paint has faded/cracked etc on my 2004 td5 discovery, so if it doesn't do it on a 98 I think you're into a winner.

It's not so much paint fading, more the degeneration of the clear (top) coat, look at many metallics of 5-10 years old. They can be re-clear coated.

Check for rust in the front footwells and rear compartment above the fuel tank.

With the $$ saved buying a V8 over a Diesel example, and a light right foot then you should be quite happy.

500km/tank is about norm, (16 to 18l/100) but drive it hard/ tow big things and see it blow out to 30+/100:twisted:

Great simple vehicle though, makes you smile driving them:)

If you've found a '98 with paint still on the sunny side,,
someones already repainted it--

of course its worth purchasing,
just remove the centre muffler and you'll be grinning from ear to ear;):cool:

I have a white '97, and the paint is still in quite nice condition, so it is possible if you get a non-metallic one.

Check the alpine skylights for rust. Also, the rear door strikers on both sides of mine have got a bit of bubble rust coming through, so check that too.

Have had a great run out of ours. Apart from servicing, it gets very little love and it just keep on going. Can't kill it with a stick.

paint and roof lining are usually common points of failure in a disco with the roof lining apparently it is fairly easy to do
