Hi all,

Looking at some new tyres and came across Dunlop road grippers 7.50R16LT.

They look all right but would like to know what they like in real road/dirt/wet/dry conditions.Cost is $175 ea which is not too bad

Can anyone shed some light on them. :)

Thanks.
cheers

Hi, I used to buy these as take off tyres - new tojos would come out with them on and dealers would take them off and fit other tyres. They were the made in Japan Dunlops. I used them on my classic RR on standard steel rims and they were great in all road conditions and surfaces including rugged terrain on station tracks, high country, etc. They were much better than my wide duellers on after market 15" white rims - better all round. Hope that helps!

Hmmm, my opinion is that they do absolutely nothing to a satisfactory standard and they handle poorly in the dry let alone the wet roads. Offroad they were ok for trails etc. I would have called them more an Ag tyre than anything else.

For $175 they are ok, fitted as standard to poverty pack land cruisers.
Good compromise tyres for doing a round Oz trip, won't last any more than about 50,000 klm.
Adjust tyre pressures according to conditions and they will be fine for a Defender running standard rims !!

Agree with Marty they were a LOT better on & off road than BS Duellers that I replaced the Road Grippers with on my 105 Cruiser

I think Slunnie might be confusing them with Super Grippers which are more Ag tyre and not so good on road, and only last half the distance.

i've had a set on an Isuzu powered Landrover trayback before. Ran them up the highway a lot where they were reasonably quiet and got pretty good wear out of them. Didn't take them anywhere adventurous off road though they were good on the beach and trails. The sidewalls are pretty thin though, so you have to treat them with respect. Didn't have any problems in the wet but because, like the Discoveries, I had full time 4wd. I've got a set at home from a Toyota buyerright now who needed fat tyres to feel good about his poor choice that will go on one of mine. For what I paid for them, I'll certainly use them. They are a far better tyre than the Duellers I've had the misfortune to have had on a couple of trucks.Hope this is of some help

Thanks for the replies guys.

Have a choice of 3:-
Maxis Bravo MA751 all terrain
BFGoodrich T/AKO all terrain
Khumo Road Venture AT KL78
All are roughly in the same price range give or take $50-$100 bills for 4

Will be 60% hwy,40% off road.

What would you put on your beast? :p

cheers

Yes I have had them as take offs as has been said. No punctures in 40k km and still holding in there, if anything they have gone hard and squawk as I go around roundabouts at slow speed. I think they are a Jack of All Trades and Master of None. OK on the defender.

I might have the wrong tyre. I was talking about the ones that come on the LandCruiser DX (105?) on the split rims. I really was unimpressed by them as opposed to not thinking much about them.

Maxxis or BFG, but with that much offroading probably the BFG for a bit more bite.

X2,i have had a few sets, found them also to be very robust.

Just put a set on the D4,but haven't been off the blacktop yet.

Gazza,

Much debated topic which really comes down to personal opinion and preference so here's my 2 cents:

At that price very little will compare with the BFG AT. They are very quiet on the black, very hard wearing (without compromising handling) and most probably the best AT off road.

The only reason people shy away from them is ussually the price and if you can get them within $100 for 4 from the other choices IMO it would be a simple decision.

Mate on the Daly River in NT runs them on his cruisers, reckons there alright but he is just doing gravel runs etc and nothing real hard. The cruiser is parked on the north side of the river in the wet and uses the boat to cross over. Just a simple life.
