I have nothing but respect for Hemi's esp the thumping 245.
I had one in a 3t J3 Bedford that had a beaver-tail tray.
One car on the back & one on a trailer and it still did 100km/hr on a freeway using LPG. It made a few jaws drop- Bedfords are not known for their speed!
Mind you, it was revving its t*ts off!

I had a Series 2a Tray with a Hemi 245 , a Nissan 5 speed box from a Caball (gearshift pattern was backwards) , power steering and Macnamara difflock.
Sold about 12 yrs ago. Was a great truck, can't be too many others with the same setup. wonder if its still about !.

I have looked into the engine size as I have one in WA too, it has the blue engine which is a 265 not a 245 they were usually red engines.

The engine size is cast on the side of the block. Engine no. will reveal date of manufacture. Late hemis were emasculated by emissions controls and a high torque low speed camshaft. Probably the best ever conversion for a Series. Get a pair of CM split headers and a four barrel intake manifold to take a Rochester Quadrajet. Get a proper camshaft. Easy to get a tractable 300 street horsepower out of a 265 and they will handle 6000rpm all day.

Mike,
In addition to the Hemi 245 and 265 engines Chrysler also made a 215 c.i. version. I had one fitted to a VJ Dodge ute. The all had Hydraulic valve lifters (quiet and no adjustment required) and an excellent Bosch electronic ignition system, well ahead of its time and local competition.

I have a new intake manifold for a Hemi with near new Rochester Quadrajet carb. and the CM split cast iron exhaust headers if anyone is interested. A bolt up fit. No jet fiddling required. I have used this combination on divers vehicles including a 245 in a P76. Series III wagon, EH Holden, J2 Bedford. I regard this as the absolute best repower for a Series or early Range Rover.
I also have a 2 x 1 3/4" SU manifold and carbs with GM-H split iron headers for a red Holden.
If interested, contact me.

The 215 had a points distributor. I used one on a 265 CM in combination with a Jaycar electronic ignition kit. The ELB system fitted to the CM was more for emission control than performance. So scrap the ELB.
