View Full Version : I finally bogged Monty

A fantastic trip to the Watagans this Easter weekend. I went with 2 Toyota drivers and had a ball, finding some great trails with plenty of gradient, loads of mud and standing water.

Eventually found one big, wet and gooey enough to bog Monty, which I'd never managed before. The Toyota snatching me out got bogged trying, it was hilarious and great fun. Learned a lot about the difference between Low range 2 and 3!

What was particularly nice, was tackling some really tricky wet puddles with very steep entries and exits and having a couple of blokes coming the other way stop and give us some advice and help. This is when the Deefer came into his own and the Toyotas were left struggling. I'm rapidly learning that my vehicle is frequently capable of a lot more than I'm comfortable putting it through!

There's plenty more trails up there that we didn't get to explore so I think we'll be back soon, particularly given how easy it is to get there. While there are a couple of well-established campsites with facilities, we opted for a clearing in the middle of nowhere for a bit more peace and quiet and feasted on camp oven roast chook and beef in red wine stew....and a couple of beers, naturally.

If you've never been up there, I highly recommend it.

Bobby

Looks like a good way to spend the long weekend - without wanting to derail I'd be interested in some info on your wheel/tyre combo?

Hey Bobby,

The Watagans are awesome, there are some really good tracks from mild to wild.

I have been riding dirt bikes up there for as long as I can remember. It is very convenient only living about 10 min’s away.

Glad you had a good time.

Cheers

N plus one......the decision-making process was thorough and as ever, I learned an enormous amount from the guys on this site. It' sall in this thread below but the short answer is that they're 265/85/16 BFG ATs on 16" steel rims with a 0 offset:

Dullbird - I'd love to! I keep forgetting to check the trip calendar for details, but I'll make it one day. Oh, and thanks for the M&M tip. They are so good.

Kaz 11 - yeah we started off in that area and then tracked north.

Drover - jealous mate. Very jealous! Kirribilli has no mud. The neighbours were fantastic when I got the compressor out though - they thought it was great that someone had a 4x4 and actually used it off road....but I think they were happier once he was clean.

Looks like you had a good time Bobby. I still maintain 99% of drivers bottle it long before the car is ready to give up.

....but I think they were happier once he was clean.

I remember last year when I came back from Alice, the car was orange from top to bottom. I decided to wash it in front of the house and the footpath and road downhill of me were stained red/orange for about 6 months after. The neighbours were pleased the car was clean, but not about the manicured footpath outside there doors:D
