View Full Version : Ignorant/stupid Question EAS ?

For those with some engineering nouse..Is it possible to locate a smaller suspension spring around the bump stop that would act as a shortstop suspension measure if the car goes into hard EAS fault. If a spring was made short enough to only work when below access mode would make getting a disabled car home with a lot more comfort.

Is this a stupid idea? Be kind when answering.

Sounds like a perfectly reasonable idea Peter. I can see no reason why it couldn't be done, other than the challenge of where it is mounted so as to not interefere with standard running gear.

I'd like to see somebody develop it in to reality.

Cheers, Paul.

I concur

If mounted over the present bump stops, they would need to be a very short and thus very stiff spring which would, in my non-engineer opinion, be prone to breaking or damaging the chassis.

My understanding is that the bumpstops are designed to act as springs albeit very uncomfortable ones on a long trip.

I was thinking the same thing after seeing Keithy's effort.

I pinched some bump stops off an early Urvan to use on another car & they were designed to be partially compressable - like a 2 stage bump stop.

I wonder if something like that would at least make the ride bearable if/when the EAS fails.

Maybe even something like this:

Would the chassis take larger bump stops in a more pliable material? That may help, wouldn't it.

May need to adjust the height for access mode...

well it may be one of those "nice if it could be done" ideas.
Seems a shame that with such a comfortable suspension that we get to ride on rubber if there is a problem with the system, sure the RR engineers would want the car repaired straight away as would we owners but as Keithy and many of us have experienced ...it can be a long way from the repair shop or home and a shame they didnt put more thought into the limp home mode. I will make some inquiries at some suspension places and see if anyone can help put something together to suit or offer some suggestions.
Thanks for the feedback

No such thing as a stupid question, only stupid people :-)
Could it be developed as an emergency get you home spring? I recently clocked over 200kms on a 3 spring dash for home after one of the buggers blew: Okay'ish albeit a bit rattly, thank god for separate air valves. Would have hated to do 2kms on bump stops, let alone 200

EAS bypass with switchable valves would make a survivable drive out even after losing a bag.

I wonder could you tap into the individual solenoids with a set of four secondary switches to allow opening/venting in the event of an eas fault?

I'm sitting on the balcony of my unit in Crete, overlooking the beautiful 'something or other' sea and wondering if this is just getting all too complicated.

Why not just use the 'Murphy' factor.

Take the parts required to fix the problem and then that item will never break down!

I carry one air spring, four individual air valves, a couple of joiners and a few inches of air hose. Plus the O rings and bits from the last refurb of the valve block and compressor. And of course another compressor for tyre pressure duties.

Anyway, I've got more important things to do now than worry about my car resting back home.

I've got to figure out how I can possibly put up with drinking Raki, and eating so much lovely food for the next couple of weeks.

Pray for me!!!

here you go! ;) EAS Manual Electric Control - Under Hood - DIY (http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/7-range-rover-mark-ii-p38/10061-eas-manual-electric-control-under-hood-diy.html)

The photo links appear to be broken.. not sure how to get the new masters of RR.net to fix it... it's a box with a bunch of switches which does exactly what you suggest!
cheers

EDIT: while the post is some 5 yrs old, you'll no doubt recognise the OP (Malafax_dand) as Storey Wilson who deserves a place on the P38 heroes Honour Board for his developing the EAS Unlock app.and bequeathing it free of charge to the P38 world wide community:clap2::clap2::clap2:

Sounds like you are doing Gallipoli for ANZAC Day?

Please take and post some photo's for us back here if you can.

It's on our "To Do/Bucket List" along with Kakoda Track and a look around places Dad served in Vietnam. Should satisfy the questions I have in my head to try and understand the crap "our team" went through to give us the relatively comfortable and mostly free life we have today.

No doubt I will be shedding a tear next to Dad at the Melbourne Shrine ANZAC day dawn service again... that damn last post gets me every time.

No DT, we're not going to Gallipoili. Just doing our bit for Greece's ailing economy.

My daughter did Gallipolli last year and said is incredibly moving, but a lot of hard work with the cold, the crowd, the walking.

Sounded too much for me.

I'd never make a digger!

Crete's a bit of a disappointment, haven't seen any Rangies at all!

Athens seemed to have more Rangies than any other 4wd, but on Crete its all Hiluxes again.

Anyway, back to the hard life!

Interesting about the number of Rangies in Greece. I have sold EAS repair kits and EAS Unlock Cables all over Europe and the Mediterranean but none to Greece.
Maybe they are a bit more self sufficient?

Nice to see you taking one for the team Trev ;)
