View Full Version : Puma tailshaft service

I have difficulty greasing the front tailshaft on the Puma, with the center type grease nipples. I find the grease nipple points to the center of the yolk and grease gun doesn't locate correctly. The only way I find of getting grease in correctly is by removing the front joint, allowing the joint to be opened up. This is a pain and I probably don't grease as often as I might otherwise.

I use a MacNaught K28.

I am told later Hilux have the same issues.

Any bright ideas?

Eric, I have the same problem with the ones on my County, so when I do a service I remove both from the vehicle and grease them properly. This way you can make sure that grease is getting to all 4 caps - and I find it's easier to clean up the excess. I hate grease splattered everywhere.

Erich, This a USA catalogue but places like Repco etc will have needle attachments exactly the same in Aus, I have one it is the only way to do Puma shafts.
NAPA AUTO PARTS (http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx?R=BK_7152024_0006392028) This is also used for any lolux or cruiser we work on.

Hi Eric

I jack my Defender chassis up letting the axle hang down, rotate the shaft to have the grease nipple facing the open side of the uni-joint and then get grease everywhere.

PS, Graham has the D2a on the road now and is very happy with it.

Fit longer nipples,I've done that on the Tdi and makes greasing a breeze. Pat

With my 2009 Puma front tailshaft I've found that access to the grease nipples varies with rotation of the tailshaft. With the nipple pointing to 1 O'clock (looking forward under the vehicle) I can fit the grease gun nozzle reasonably easily by coming down onto the nipple. With the tailshaft in any other positions eg with the nipple pointing down, the yolk is closed up and the nozzle cannot go onto the nipple correctly.
This approach angle is far easier than removing the tail shaft and works for me and with the size of the nozzle on my grease gun.
