View Full Version : Am I being short changed by my service schedule?

Hi all,

I'm starting to get a bit suss about the service claims on this D4.

From new my car told me to get a service when it was 9 months old and had done 16,000Km's. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe the time clock for the 12months (or 24,000Km's) was running from the day it left the factory so the earlier than expected time frame was taking into account added transportation time from factory to me.

However, yesterday I got a brief message on the central display saying next service due in 2,250km's then it went away. This is annoying as I have only done a further 6,500km's since last service which was 5 months ago.

This is not how it was explained to me or how it states in the schedule.

There is a health check service at 12,500ks (things only changed if needed)

First service is 24,000ks, so if you have 24,000ks up, it is due for it's first service.

While it's in, mention your getting the service message before it's due.

considering where you live could the computer be taking tropical conditions, therefore more service intervals?

On startup my 2011 D4 starting telling me it was due for a service from about 3500km beforehand.

The interesting thing is, the car thinks the service is due at 25,000km, not the 24,000 on the sticker on the windscreen.

I rang the dealer and they confirmed it was due at 24,000km but had no explanation as to why the car thought it should not be done until 25,000km.

I know Queenlanders think they are in a differant country:p but no it's probably a clitch in the electrics, a software upgrade may fix it.

I think that the computer service display reminders calculations are for EU style driving. That is moderate weather, pavement, autobahns, no roos, gators or bunnies; no wading, no rock climbing, no sand, no dust, no bugs even.

I say no bugs, as a couple of times I was in France for a few weeks driving about, not once did a bug splash itself on the windscreen, very little dust accumulated and no one seemed to know what mud was. Yes, it could be cloudy, and it did rain, but that was about it for extremes.

With some of the D4 engines, I am not even certain that you can physically check the oil any longer. That might be OK when all is under warranty but later on, I wonder.

I guess fly by wire over the oceans is routine, but somehow I just think this service thing should be a bit more to do with where the vehicle is driving rather than some odometer reading.

IMO the most important service...........and oil change is at 12,000 Klm's.

24,000 Klms is too long.

I was able to negotiate a "Corporate Package" when I bought my D4. It meant a discount, free carpet floor mats and free servicing for three years ( or 100,000km).

My first service according to the sticker is due at 13,000km which is sooner than the manual says it is needed. I reckon my dealer would not offer an "early" free service unless Land Rover pay for it as part of the package or it is a really good idea (or both).

Our 2011 D4 3.0 is also under corporate plan. Health check services have been done at 13000kms and 39000kms and scheduled service at 26000kms as per the manual. All covered by corporate plan. Don't recall getting a service due warning - will pay closer attention before the 52000 service.

I kept getting hassled by a dealer that the car was due for its service after 6 months. I kept saying, no its 12 months. They insisted to retain value and protect the engine I needed it done every 6 months.

I got them to put this in writing.

Then I advised them I was on a corporate plan, so the servicing was free. Should have seen them backtrack on their previous advice, and tell me the car was fine for 12 monthly service.

I sent their email to LR and then the dealer rang back to advise that 6 monthly servicing would be covered by the corporate program.

6 months = oil service, 12 months= by the book.

Thought this might be of interest.

Do yourselves a massive favour and get the oil & filter changed every 13,000 Klm's.
Extremely cheap insurance and better appreciated when you re-sell.

We did as you did, had a real service at 12,500ks and will contiue to have it serviced at the halfway service points, we tow and do a lot of outback Ks, so this is a no brainer, we are also having to transmission done at 80,000ks as well.

As you say cheap insurance.

I am 2 weeks into a new D4 and also on a corporate plan. The sticker says first service is due at 12,000 k's whereas the manual says 24,000 k's/12 mths.

Disappointing... I didn't notice until now that the car has no mudflaps for offroad. Another addition required.

I do like the rear camera as I can now see the tow bar. No more yelling at each other from the back of the car when/after hitching on the camper.

I haven't really got to the bottom of my query but I seem to have opened up another debate and user opinion review.

So it seems that from what plenty have suggested on here, and other forums, and despite what must have been millions of pounds spent by LR in their R&D budgets that they got it wrong. Popular opinion is that although what they say in their warranty contracts, I should get my car serviced twice a much as they suggest.

Really!!!!!! surely not.

Times have changed and progress is made so maybe gone are the days of back yard tinkering and constant meddling with fluids, rotating stuff and playing with things in the hope you are getting more product life. If it was that necessary surely a global brand of this magnitude would have told us.

Even with the hard conditions and towing in outback stuff LR know full well where their vehicles go and they often end up in harsher places than whoop whoop.

Just my opinion, obviously.

Ozzie 119, I can see where you are coming from, but with this service schedule LR are confident there will be no problems during warranty. After that they have washed their hands of any responsibility for it.
Remember too that with this long time between fluid changes they are complying with their green (EPA) obligations.
In my industry oil generally lasts at least half life of the engine, but has regular testing for engine health.
I have, with my new D4, already planned for an oil and filter change at approximately 7500KM and then I will be happy for it to go to the standard 24000KM for it's next oil change (3.0) but will certainly do an intermediate change if I am towing or operating in harsh conditions.

The only real way to tell if the oil needs changing is to sample it & send it away for testing.

I did this with the D2 & at 20k it was fine.I did it a few times to be sure,as we encounted different driving conditions at different times.

I was using Castrol oils& we were also using Castrol oils at work,so i was lucky enough to have them done at no cost.as far as i know Castrol don't do this testing anymore,but there are independant labs that do.

Gotta agree with Craig here. Service schedule is 24Km's, BUT LR recommend the "Health Check" every 12km's. Basically a lube change. It IS very cheap insurance, even if the oils are lasting as long as they say, it doesn't cost a lot to keep the engine wear to a minimum. Changing the oil....on any vehicle....isn't going to hurt it. But it might look after it?? Spending what we do to purchase these vehicles, then to skimp on a few litres of oil now and again is madness.
