The second hand 17inchMICKEY THOMPSON ATZ are at their end now. About 50k traveled for second hand tires including oonandatta and a few trips in the Vic Alps where I still managed to get bogged or slip off tracks while traversing.

Looking a MTZ to see if I could get through this year with out a few hours of winching over and around muddy mountains tracks. I have General Grabbers AT on 18s for day to day driving and dirt road fun.
A few posts suggest 265-70-17 fit. The ATZ are 245-70-17

  Tire 1 - 245/70R17 Tire 2 - 265/70R17 Size change Note Overall Diameter: 30.50 in 774.7 31.60 in 802.64 27.94

Hi weakestlink

Try playing with ths calculator
Tire size calculator (http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html)
Handy to see for your self the differance between tyres, height, width and the amount your speedo will be out.

If it's for occasional use, also look at the Maxxis Bighorns in 265/70R17. I found them to be a better mud tyre and they're normally cheaper. Don't think they'd wear as well as the MTZ's though.

They will fit had them on my D3.
Had to deflate the spare tyre to fit it in the carrier position.
Only issue was inner guard liner rubbed on full right hand lock in reverse which I tied back with a zip tie.
No rubbing with Llams.
Another member here has the same tyres we bought them together.
If you can get a used tyre grab it for the spare.
This will be much easier to fit in the wheel well.
I now have the ATZ 4 rib in 265 x 70 x 17 on my new car.
These are a great tyre.

I stuck with the 245/70/17 as they were similar to OEM size.
Saying this many run the 265/70/17, this size is more common than the 245 & has other benefits.
I went for the BFG,around $330 each.
Don't know about the ATZ,except the have a good reputation.

I have 265/70/17's On BB6 Performance 17 x 8" rims. They foul slightly when turning at access height. I would go for something in between next time around. Fortunately I have these as my second set. In my opinion, visually the 265/70 do look oversize on the D4.

I have LT265/70/17 Kumho KL78 ATs on our D4, they have been great so far.

Next lot will be 245/70/17, probably BFG KM2s, they were brilliant on our D2, the 265s on the D4 drag a bit of power from the car and with all the gear we have on the car and towing a camper, fuel economy is higher then we would like.

265/65-17 seems to be a more popular size in Oz than 245/70-17 yet about the same diameter, although some brands/patterns are still not available. They generally have a lower load rating than 245/70-17 but not by much.

I agree. Takes a bit of the zip out of the performance. I am also coming around to the thinking, that the more you mod a vehicle such as the D3/4, you start to change the character of the vehicle, and that is one of the reasons for choosing the D4 over the Patrol/Cruiser options.

Go the LT265/70/17 MTZ's.
They are a great tyre & work extremely well in all off road conditions.
As Admiral has said they can drain power/economy a little but i can live with that.
The only down side is they can be a little noisey, but the vehicle insulation is great & so is the stereo system:D

Hi weakestlink,
I replaced my MTZ 265/70/17 with Cooper STT 245/70/17 because I wanted to fit the spare easily in the original spot. The MTZs came with my D3 when I bought it and now means I have six practically new tyres for sale. Four of them have 10mm of tread and two have about 12-13mm left. I believe this is not the place for advertisements, so please PM me if interested in the MTZs.
I have advertised them at

I have the 265-70-17 MTZ put on yesterday. Thanks for all the responses and advice. Noise is a little louder of course.
Found my Speedo is now on the money. I know Speedo may be adjustable by a dealer but never bothered as my VMS GPS is right on the money, speed alerts, camera locations (not that I need them honest) Saw a sticker on the back of a nice truck yesterday. If you think I am going slow now, you should see me in low range!”
Speedo was showing 100kph when real speed was 93kph. Now it looks inside a 1% error. The larger diameter slightly lower revolutions just gave a bonus I did not expect.
Will get them very dirty up high in the Victorian Alps soon and see if my winch can get rusty due to a lack of use/abuse for a change.
Saw a new Coopers AT at guests4wd. It was a 18inch and looks a lot more aggressive than the older variations and more aggressive than my 18 inch AT General Grabbers. I think it was a 3ply side wall. Pushing on the side wall of the Mickey T ATZ showed they were pretty soft. The Mickey T MTZ was much stiffer as was the new coopers.
Nice to see more options and more off road capable tires are coming out in 18 inch as well. When the 18inch GGs die on me now I will have to consider a road tire I suppose give the nice set of muddies on the 17 inch rims I havenow.
Thanks for your offer Doug. I had already ordered them before I saw yours for sale.

(excuse the "love james" bit- it is for my wife and kids)
Lot of very steep slippery wet clay and rocky climbs, Deep ruts and washouts to test the D3 with my new tires.
Last my last effort in this area on GG 18" AT saw at least four sections with winch pulls needed and a lot of groundings and rock scraping under the car.
LLAMS and the extra height and grip the 265-70-17 MTZ saw the winch unsued at all. With only two second attempts needed to get up the really tough bits. 12 odd river crossings with low water giving no trouble and not one grounding or rock strike under the car.
I left a number plate, mud flap, UHF arial and about 5kgs of me behind. Backpacking over some of the mountains in two legged mode is where most of my time was spent in this fanastic location. Not one person or any other cars sighted in three days untill Mt Tamboritha rd which is a fun road but really 2wd fodder.
Fuel economy was 14.8 litres for the whole trip with 150 km plus in low range. Will try again if it snows before the gates to the National parks shut.

LLAMS rated 10/10 Tires rated 9/10 Like other reports I do get a slight rub when reversing with the wheel almost locked to the LHS.
Back at work with 18 inch rims on today :(
