Another One. Thoughts on 2002 Freeloader

OK, before I get flamed I know the 4cyl was a bucket. But looked at a 2002 V6 Freelander today. Auto, leather. Yard just changed the timing belt. Daughter liked it a lot. Really good nic.
What are the pitfalls of these and are they really that bad?

DO NOT go down that road please Craig. Possible trans issues, $$$$$$, possible slipped Liners,$$$$$$$, STILL have the IRD and Viscous unit issues, rear diff mounts, intake manifold butterfly valves loose, etc etc etc etc

Trust me on this, I don't work on these anymore for a variety of reasons.

If she wants a gaylander why not go for a diesel, won't have anywhere near the problems of the petrols, but that is relative lol. The TD4 (BMW motor) is good according to dad (ex dealer)

Engines slip liners like the 4 cylinder petrol and the transmissions are prone to (expensive) failure. Plus they love to drink fuel. The only Frelander 1 I would touch (not that I would) would be a diesel one.

Thanks for that and you are the man I know I should listen to on these. Shame as it was just about perfect and in the price range. I reckon the thing would have never seen any dirt.
Back to looking for something else then.
Any recommendations for a 16yo? Preferably light weight 4x4.

Subaru Forrester? Outback? These are a very well built and reasonably priced vehicle, easy to maintain etc BUT try and get a sub 200K example as the EJ 20 and EJ25 16V do suffer from external head gasket leaks, mostly oil and or coolant from the rear of the heads, and oil consumption if poor servicing or poor fuel has been used. They require PULP to run right. HEad gaskets are an engine out job but aren't difficult, Timing belts are a breeze and overall i like working on them, it is amazing how many LR owners have them as second cars. I think we have about 15 of them that we work on.

Still a good safe car IMO.
