Large oil leak help

Hi guys,

Yep my d2a marks its territory quite badly and it seems is getting worse. My mechanic said it was a seal of some sort that would cost a cool $1500 or more to replace. So, for the gurus, can anyone shed any more light on this leak, and can anyone tell me what's required to replace the seal/gasket? Here are some photos of the oil in the undercarriage. It is half way down the vehicle. Sorry they're not the clearest pics but I'm hoping some of the LR Sages on here will know more than me.

I thought it was leaking from just infrint of the crankshaft(?) but I think it's coming from that plate above it on an angle....yep I'm thick and can't really describe the leak or where mechanically it comes from.

Any comments on this leak?

Your photos are pretty poor for diagnosis but to me , seeing the auto sump seems dry , the leak is either from the seal between the auto and transfer case( the sloping plate) or from the front seal or the transfer.

Take some phots from the front to show where the oil flow starts , ie where there is no oil in front of.

If it is either of those seals then IMHO it should not cost $1500, more like $600 or so, however one of teh mechanics on the forum could probably quote better.
I suggest that you take the car to a LR specialist for a diagnosis and quote rather than a local mechanic who will probably not have the special lift for the transfer case and not want to do it anyway.
Triumph Rover Spares is one specialist in Adelaide that I know of.

Most likely the transfer case intermediate shaft o rings, and/ or as phillipA suggested the transfer case input seal.

Be wary that higher mileage LT230 cases have a tendency to leak also due to the intermediate shaft flogging out the case, MR automotive do exchange modified transfer case housings or even complete units if you prefer, to stop this happening.

If it is JUST a seal or Oring, then 4 to 6 hours labour and $30 worth of seals, but I stopped quoting on these a while back as more and more high mileage ones are cropping up with more serious faults than a hardened leaking Oring.

My '99 D2 had a similar leak from the time I bought it. When I had to remove the gearbox to replace the clutch, I also repaired the leak.

I assumed (after lots of reading on here) that it would be the intermediate shaft o-rings but when I removed the transfer case from the gearbox to replace the o-rings it was very obvious that the leak was the input seat to the transfer case.

Which ever yours is leaking from, the transfer case has to be removed to repair it so it is worth doing both anyway. The seals are the cheap part of the job.

High mileage doesn't necessarily mean that the housing around the intermediate shaft will be worn. Mine has 250K on it and the transfer case had no sign of wear at all.

Quite true BUT we see heaps that have towed for a long time, they are the worst examples for case wear.

My transfer case leaked from the rear. Had an LR specialist (Cando automotive in lilydale) have a look at it and said some nuts and bolts weren't countersunk properly so it was leaking. Cost me 140 or so for the job to take it off, investigate and fix, also got them to do the auto oil for 150 before I went away. That was my leaky t-case story anyways and it was a massive leak to but more around the rear of the case just before the handbrake drum and the rubber spacer thing was always coated in oil, not so much the cross member.

After 15 odd years of using Disco's I can tell you the TC's leak.
Towing causes them to leak more.

I use the same oil level gauge. Spots = oil, once it stopped leaking for a week and I thought it was low on oil. Nope, it was just the TC playing with me, it had plenty of oil in it and recommenced leaking a few days later.

Well now I've been told by the financial planner that it is highly likely I'll have to sell the discovery and get a twin cab ute (FBT exempt). So, it's off to the mechanic to get the leaks fixed ($1500) and to get the roof resprayed too....then.....time to sell it.
