Hi everyone!
I’ve been floating around AULRO for a while now, reading up on all things D1, getting ready for the right car to pop up.
Finally a good deal came up and I was lucky enough to get in first and snatch it up.

1997 D1, 300Tdi Manual with 227k on the clock. Completely stock apart from the Coopers, but I do have plans...

It didn’t come registered, so I’ll have to whip it into shape for the roady. I think I know the main things to look out for, but are there any odd little things I should be aware of?

Does anyone know if the bonnet latch is critical? Unless this is acceptable…hehe

Anyway, really looking forward to getting this beast on the road, need to think of a name too!

Cheers,

Andrew.

things to be aware of if you are not already aware
1...get rid of the black overflow bottle and get a whiteish one
2...get an engine monitor for the water
3...think about head gasket and it coming to the 250k mark
4...timing belt change depending on when it was last done
that will do..........for now :D

Is there meant to be a shroud over that fan? looks a bit too out in the open...

Ditto re the black overflow bottle which cracks. Get the white one.
Your shroud is missing from the fan.
Have you pulled up the front carpets to check for rust, a common problem area.
Looks a pretty clean vehicle.

Thats nice i like the D1's in silver. I've got a white 300 tdi, it doesnt 'pop' as much as the silver does. It looks like a really well spec'd D1.

Fan top shroud, and bonnet cable really do need to be done.

Check wheel bearings for excessive play before trying to license.

Other than the other things mentioned over flow bottle, head gasket timing belt etc.

On the 300 tdi manual's the push rod for the clutch fork punches straight through the clutch fork.... Really annoying as you end up on the side of the road, and to change it, its gearbox out so you may aswell do a clutch at the same time... and generally even if its had a clutch change in its life, they wont have changed the clutch fork.

Thanks for the heads up guys! Didn't know that about the overflow bottle.
I know the timing belt has recently been done and the head gasket is in the back of my mind.

I've already ordered an EGT gauge from Auber Instruments so I can keep an eye on temps, especially if I decide to play with the injection pump :D

Looks like I've got a few things to look for on eBay.

I've gone for a few sneaky drives around the block and from what I can tell it's an awesome car to drive! Really wanting this rwc... :wallbash:

spend time on ebay and places like rimmer brothers and paddocks both in UK

the engine monitor mentioned is for measuring the actual head metal temp and is far better than the gauge. the monitor also has a buzzer for when it reaches a set temp for too high and you have the option of connecting the oil light to the buzzer as well.
i should mention this is what i have on my monitor which is an em2 watchdog from ebay but located in Brisbane, i believe there is another monitor on ebay located in the U.S. and i think dave has one located at the top of the page here.
so one of these things and the EGT gauge should have you very well covered

I also highly recommend the EM2 watchdog. He sells one also that has a coolant level sender that replaces the radiator filler plug.Just google enginewatchdog,he seems to have a new version and he is a nice guy to deal with up on the Sunshine Coast.

Nice purchase! I'm jealous because yours looks in much better condition than my '95 D1. Mine has had some exciting adventures though. ;)
