hi all
sorry for the delay in posts ( rotten old work stuff getting in the way )
well... after miss guided poor showing on the trip to the swim in ( bad girl )and being rescued by lots of landies and master chief (big thanks to you 2 would not have made it home with out your help )
the engine came out and yes it had a head gasket problem so off to for a rebuild it went, sleaves and bottom end re do heads redone , great result , just put back in after a few hours of spannering
what fun and... it runs .. like a dream ... few more things to do and off for a road test cant wait
thanks to all who helped i should of had the engine re done when i got it but you live and learn

Looks like I will be canned at this years winter rallie ?
I priced parts for the 4.6 motor with Top hatted seleeves, not cheap .
With the history these motors have of slipping seleeves I will not fit my motor untill its fully rebuilt.

to get the best out of your engine you should get some one to check the air/ fuel ratio out of the exhaust pipe and get the carbies set up for the bigger engine.
dyno would be best, but expensive, or find some one who can read the sparkplugs well to try and figure out how much fuel that motor needs.

may be some where on the internet some one has the main jet and needle sizes they used on the 4.6 fitted to a early range rover.
(The other answer is weld in a your own sensor to the exhaust pipe using a kit.
I have had no experience in doing this)

In the good old days you could adjust the carby by looking at the exhaust pipe colour.....how I miss leaded fuel

For the Stollie BYO jerry can and drive to Nowra.
There is a play paddock near work.(waiting for someone to dump a car there so I can be enviromently friendly and crush it :D)

good idea about the dyno tune talked to ward at coopers and he thinks new needles will do the trick so close yet so far the radiator was leaking a bit when a got it going so off it went 50 % blocked was hoping to get it back as i am taking the girls away today well it will be next week till i can take it for a run talk soon

DEFINATELY needle change is mandatory. I did that after a Hi comp 3.9 V8 short was fitted to a County, admittedly had SU's instead of 175CD's, but made a huge improvement in running temps, lack of detonation, and fuel economy improved being able to run more advance etc. Enrichening it won't necessarily make it use more fuel.

So Iain you have not actually told us what happened. I guess a blown head gasket but when I last saw it - it was running OK down at Corowa just before you were going to leave to go home.

hi garry , yes all sorts of dramas down south, thats why you saw me spannering about on show day. the old girl boiled at Albury on the way down then it was a big problem on the way home , but in true landrover style it got me home. hopefully this "update" will fix the problems, fingers crossed
just had a great weekend with the girls down at wombian caves took the 1989 and 1980 range rovers and the no 5 with all the junk one needs
