View Full Version : After market tire pressure sensors.

I was surprised to find that my 2008 Sport doesn't have the tire pressure monitoring system installed.
Retrofitting the OEM kit is extremely complicated and costly so I am looking at a system that compliments the car nicely.
Has anyone on here done the same with their Sport or LR3/4? I don't want to fit the unsightly screw on Dust Cap type, I'd rather go for a system with the sender installed inside the tire.

thx.

i have 2 sets of TPMS, one on my Disco 1 and another on my D3.

I got both through Hannibal in Brisbane.

The D1 has the sensor inside the tyre but attached to the valve..The D3 has the sensor strapped to the rim inside the tyre.

Both work well but the uptake to the display is quicker on the D3.

I had an issue with one of the sensors , that trivial that I forget what it was, but I do remember Hannibal were excellent at sorting it out...it was on the old valve attached sensor...I've had no problems with the sensors strapped inside the rim'

It has never occured to me that this could be an after market installation. Can you give a rough estimate of the cost? Can it be a DIY job?

I have been interested in this too. There was a group of guys that put together a group buy of the Tyredog TPMS back 2008:
DISCO3.CO.UK - View topic - Tyre Pressure Monitoring system (TPMS) bulk purchase (http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic18453.html)
TYREDOG - TPMS Wireless Tyre Pressure and Temperature Monitoring Systems (http://www.tyredog.com.au/store/)

Following is a discussion retrofitting the LR one with some part numbers:
DISCO3.CO.UK - View topic - Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic34972.html)

Here's a South African mob that does a version:
Valor On/Off Road 201-S TPMS (http://tyrecheckers.co.za/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=4&category_id=1&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=431&vmcchk=1&Itemid=431)

Not sure of the features though. I would expect any TPMS you fit should be capable of having varying standard pressures - one for off road pressures (sand/rock) and normal road pressures. I imagine that would be part of the unit calibration.

I'll look in to a bit more and post up if I come up with anything.

Then there's this. Not cheap but includes reverse camera & new mirror.

There is also this mob in the US selling TPMS go to Discovery 4 accessories and it's in there.

The same system is also available here

Redback, I saw that too but I think it's only for the individual units for the tyre and does not include the ECU etc..

Nice. It would be good if it could be integrated with existing screen rather than replacing the rear view mirror.

I have installed a system from Kipoint in my D4. Cost about $120 on ebay and has been working fine for 6 months so far. Shows tyre pressure, temp and car voltage. Has alarms that can be set for different pressures. The display is easy visible in all light conditions.

See KIPOINT ENTERPRISE CO. LTD. www.kipoint.com.tw (http://www.kipoint.com.tw)

By coincidence I got a call from my brother today. He had two flat tyres on his D4 while out on a club excursion. He wanted me to bring him my spares as we both have D4s.

A rocky creek bed was involved. One tyre showed severe damage presumably made worse by driving on it flat for a while. The expert advice from the experienced club members was that Sensa Tyre TPMS was a good system.

It is an internal clamp/strap to rim inside the tyre system. There is also a valve stem internal system. It can monitor trailer tyres at the same time as the car. Up to 16 sensors. Sensors turn on when the car reaches 5km/h and off after 5 minutes stationary. Batteries in each sensor last 10 years (longer than I keep cars).

I am looking into prices.

Do you have to get the wheels balanced after fitting these things?

I have had the "unsightly" screw on ones for about 5 years. Work perfectly, and swap them to trailers as necessary. Batteries last atleast 12 months. Have been hammered offroad and still no issues.

They are small and have no effect to tyre balance.

Brother as used the internal valve, and has swapped to the wind on units from TPMS....due to failure.

Since the internal devices require that tyre is removed. I would expect the balance would also need checking.

The screw on devices would appear to be a simple solution. I was concerned that they would get stolen.

You are correct Fred that the tyre has to be removed to fit the sensors..I have sensatyre fitted to both mine.

The tyres will thus be balanced after fitting

The cost of the unit is about the same as a new tyre..Just save one tyre from blowing and it will have paid for itself.

The display sits anywhere you want ..as long as it will reach a 12v socket

I don't think anyone would bother stealing them. They do have a lock nut, but after 5 years, no one has had a go at mine....lock nut would be a pain with all the airing down that I do.

Display available on my tyre dogs with or without 12 volt power. Has battery backup, and when it senses movement it comes to life.

Tells you the temperature, which I thought would be useful hanging out in the air, but somehow told me my box trailer needed bearings to be serviced, due to higher temperature.

They are worth every cent.

I'm still thinking about this....

Are the internal devices prone to damage when a tyre deflates? If so, does this mean a warning may not be transmitted?

Fred,

You would have noticed the drop in pressure via the display b4 any damage occurred (hopefully)

Replacement sensors are not that expensive and just need to be programmed into the display.

I think being within the internal structure of the rim, they would unlikely be damaged.

The checking of pressures on all devices is constant....it's virtually instant, then you pull over. Set it up correctly for low and high temp and pressures, and you can travel with confidence.

Anyone had a any experiance with these from ebay?

eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251040546766&ssPageName=ADME:B:WNAFP:AU:1123)

Would love to have the factory system in my 2011 HSE, (talks about it in the handbook at least), however suspect the rigmoral of getting up and running would be prohibative on a number of fronts?

After due consideration I have bought and fitted the TPMS Australia system. 9 sensors and the base unit came to $670. The sensors are only 8grams and are totally sealed. Eventually the batteries will go flat and the sensors will need to be replaced. Replacements are sold at 20% off the $55 for the first purchase.

I am happy with the system. The receiver is small and sits in the little shelf above the upper glove box in my D4. It was straight forward to configure 6 tyres for the car and three for the trailer. I have specified different pressures front, rear and trailer. The trailer sensor signals are readily detected and I did not need to buy the trailer relay/signal booster which saves and extra $135. It is easy to adjust the receiver to stop monitoring the trailer when it is not connected.

Little counter weights are supplied to restore the wheel balance, but fitting these is optional and I have not felt the need to do it yet. I have fitted the anti-theft locks while I drive in the city, but they are easily taken off with the supplied tool. I intend to remove the locks when I'm on trips to make airing up and down easier.

Bought mine from Opposite Lock and the price is the same as listed online at TPMS Australia.

I've had the TireDog kit fitted to my Discovery WOLF rims for about a month now. They screw onto the valve and have the lock ring for added piece of mind.
I've been fording with them, sand driving, rock crawling etc and am very happy with them.

Since I started this thread with a view to fitting them to my RRS I'll go for an internal rim mounted brand called 'Orange'...they are getting very good reviews.
