Cleaning TD5 MAP Sensor

I had a go at cleaning the MAF sensor today. Thought I would take some photos and put them up as they might help someone who has not done it before.

First disconnect the ambient temp sensor on the air box and also disconnect the MAF sensor remove the intake hose from the passenger side of the air box on the defender, this is done with the 2 clips then it just slides out.

the MAF sensor is now ready to be removed from the hose. back off the jubilee clamp and then pull the MAF sensor off the hose towards the airbox.

give it a big spray with contact cleaner to get rid of any dust or insects that might be trapped in there, don't poke anything in there to clean it or you will break it and be up for a new one. once its clean it will look like this... you can see the wire mesh behind the plastic screen in this photo.

now reverse the process of taking it out making sure the arrow on the sensor is facing in the direction of airflow when refitting.

Often guys have problems and it is suggested they clean their MAP sensor and MAF Sensors. I couldn't find a lot of info about doing this so I thought I would take some photos as I decided to do this today as I got bored.

Hopefully this helps someone who is not confident to give it a go, I am in no way mechanically competent and I managed :D

First step is to remove the acoustic cover off the engine ( if its still on there) and locate the sensor. the MAP Sensor is over near the oil dipstick you can't miss it

CAREFULLY unplug sensor

now its time to undo the 2 x 8mm bolts that hold the sensor in place. once those are off the sensor can be carefully pulled out. there is an O-Ring on the sensor the seal it up and it offers some resistance when pulling it out. I used a very small flat blade screwdriver to gently push it out from the manifold on both sides so it came out square.

Once the MAP Sensor is out it will hopefully look something like this. Mine was quite clean although a little oily but if you have not removed the EGR then it can be extremely gunked up with crud.

Give it a good spray out with contact cleaner, aparently it is quite delicate so i avoided wiping it as the contact cleaner did a good job. once its clean and dry it ready to go back in

Then simply slide it back in and do up the bolts again, then reconnect the connector after giving it a hit with the contact cleaner. Job Done

... and DON'T do it with a hot engine. Make sure it's cooled down to ambient first. The cold temperature of the CO cleaner will fracture the fine MAF wire if it's hot.

Yeah good point.... I forgot to mention that part. I waited until everything was cool as I was doing a few other jobs and did the MAF and MAP clean after the car cooled for about 2 hours....

Thanks for the great tutorial. My Disco was running like a dog on hot days. Now purring like a kitten. Only took me 10 minutes to do and what a difference it has made. Cheers Bill
