I am trying to find out the correct order for wearing my uncles Army medals. I know they are worn on the right side, but in what order. I have contacted a couple of RSL clubs and they can't help me. Thanks, Jim

It's an Honour - Honours - Awards - Wearing Awards (http://www.itsanhonour.gov.au/honours/awards/wearing.cfm#Order)

We will need to know what medals you have, and then you can refer to the Govts own guide to order etc of wear,...

they should be worn on right side (as they are not your medals) indicating that you are wearing them in memory of the person so awarded not trying to claim them as your own.

I have a miniture set of medals belonging to each of my grandfathers, one from WW1 one from WW2 and I wear them both proudly.

<< EDIT >>
I started answering this just after it was posted, walked away and had tea and came back and finished, should have refreshed and seen it was all answered by the time I pushed go!!
Sorry to be repeating everything thats written above!

Hello from Brisbane.

A little off topic, but I am keen to know where the best place might be to get reproductions made of old service medals.

My childrens' great grandfather was a trooper with the NSW Citizens Bushmen contingent that fought in the Transvaal during the 1898-1901 South African War including Elands River and Pietersburg.

His medals went missing years ago and we are keen to obtain a reproduction set for a mounted picture set that we have here at home. Recently, we tracked down the original set belonging to his brother - they fought together in the same squadron for their entire time in Africa - so assume they would be identical.

Is this something that is pursued through the War Memorial in Canberra or just something that is left to private businesses? Anywhere in Brisbane that is worth trying?

Cheers,

weeds

jx2mad,
The info you require can be obtained from most coin dealers as they also are into medals as well. They can provide copies of medals (normal size and miniature) and mount them on bars for easy wearing.
You should also contact Dept of Defence for a copy of your families war service record which will also list their medal entitlement.
If you need more info, I could dig out the defence contacts for the war records.

Its a worthwhile project, they provide lots of info.

First of all, genuine service medals have the name & official no. of the serviceman inscribed on them, usually on the edge. Any medals without that are copies, and should not be worn. They are good for display only. The medal issuing office for Army is :
Medals Section
Soldier Career Management Agency
GPO Box 5108BB
MELBOURNE VIC. 3001/ 1800 065 149

They should be able to answer any questions Bob

That's true of the full size medals but not miniatures. The originals and copies are all pretty much the same. And as far as not wearing any copies is concerned, each to their own. I wear copies as I'd rather not ever run the risk of losing the originals noting the fact that it's no simple matter to replace them. And like some here you don't have the originals for whatever reason but you would like to wear something to honour the one who earns them then fill your boots. The only time I take exception is when someone who isn't entitled to a medal buys a replica and passes it off as their own.
