Hi All,

I am looking at purchasing a freelander 2, I am just a little hesitant as to what model to look at, I found a well priced TD4 XS, but I am unsure about not having an armrest for the first time. Another thing which I find interesting, why is there so many low klm vehicles available at dealerships. Have buyer regretted and traded early or is there another reason, I am a sales manager and use car everyday, so I am also worried about reliability, I would love some feedback from freelander owners on their vehicles. :)

I have an 08 td4 from new. It has almost 130,000 kms on the clock and has been the best car I have owned. Most owners that I know of are very happy. They drive well on road and are very capable off road. Check out freel2.com, it's a UK site but has members world wide and there aren't too many horror stories on there just the usual info swapping. There can be issues with the rear diff starting to whine a bit. I had mine replaced under warranty no questions asked even though the car was driving well and had not let me down.
Mine has seen a lot of the outback and some pretty hard bush tracks. I wish there were some off road accessories available for it. I've said it before, but I am not sure what spares for them cost because I haven't had to buy any....touch wood :)

PS: the diesel auto is my pick. Economy is good.

Most low km cars at dealerships are ex-company cars.
They could be ex LR company cars or dealer co cars/demonstrators.

Hey Scott, you would know...is my experience pretty much common? You know I have given mine more of a hiding than most and it has taken it :)

From what I've seen, the diesel FL2s are very good in the long term. Just the odd rear diff whine & occasional electrical gremlin come to mind.

We bought an XS TD4 demonstrator in Feb this year and whilst we've not done any off road work yet the two relatively long country drives so far tell me we've made the right decision. I was apprehensive about missing the arm rest but honestly I've not missed it. We're about to head off to the Grampians and Flinders Ranges in May so that will test its off road capabilites. So far very happy.

Be careful with tyres in the Flinders. I've had mine all the way up to Arkaroola and the gravel can be sharp. I carry an extra spare off the rim because I've seen too many shredded. It's an awesome place. Arkapena Scenic Adventure is a good trek best done to finish around sunset. Tickets and camping at Rawnsley Park near Wilpena.

Just a post script when considering an XS to an SE. Whilst fiddling around under the glove box getting the car ready for the trip I came across Footwell globe holders without globes. Given I bought the car new I thought they might have been left out on the production line. Searching through the model line up and what is in each model I came across the the Footwell lights and they're not available for the XS but they are for the every model above. Now this might seem like a small issue but I thought I'll buy a couple of globes and guess what I now have light at my feet. So for $2 I now have a feature of the more expensive models. It makes me think what else could I add cheaply to increase the specifications?

Great litle pick up there. I read some where that a certain top spec car came with an on board dash computer program with all the toys/features but the lower spec cars didn't have them. In fact though the lower spec cars did have them but they were simply turned off. Can't remember what breed of car though....sigh....sorry.

SWMBO has raised the prospect of my ceasing my part time employment as P38 fixerupperer ...she would like something a bit smaller...and the FL2 diesel would fit the bill...then perhaps "...we could go touring instead of me handing you spanners...etc":wasntme:

Well I looked at some of the prices being asked for demonstrator models in Carsguide:mad::confused: one (dealer) mob in Sydney are asking $89,xxy for a 2yr old demonstrator with 5000km on the clock...I could get a reasonable L322 for that...besides which... it's out of my "common sense" league. Others are around $50+k ...it seems they're just dropping the GST etc and effectively expecting full margins for second hand cars... have I got this wrong? I think it's called sticker shock...

cheers

If you want map reading lights in your XS that are available in models above then get in touch with Brit Parts in England and source the light for about $30 including delivery.

What sort of price is realistic for a good 2nd hand XS ? SE ? HSE ?

Mid 20s to 60s depending on age. My TD4 SE is 5 years old with 80K on it. Probably worth $25K.
