Hi guys,

Does anyone make little fridge for in replacement to a Defender centre console/box?? Just thought it'd be a cool (no pun intended) idea.

Cheers

Pete

Waeco make a little fridge that will fit with room to spare - its a bit dear for what it is though but is great for drinks. I have one between the seats in my Rangie ute. Waeco CDF-11 find the info here: WAECO mobile solutions (http://www.waeco.com.au/news.asp?id=268)

There are a few around Waeco, Engel and cheaper ones. The problem is generally at the size you want are generally coolers not fridges. You generally can not cool stuff from hot, items generally need to be cold going in. You may fit one of the smaller fridges in. I looked at putting in a 27litre Engel, but it is just a bit big.

g'day again, the Waeco CDF-11 is actually a full on 11 litre fridge - it has the same compressor as the 35 litre Waeco so it is really over 'fridged' for it's size. It will also freeze, so way better than the cooler type unit options. I generally use Engel or the new ARB fridge but this is the only one I have found that is an actual fridge in this small size. cheers

I second that, we got one of these free with a larger Waeco, and its great for easily getting to chilled drinks etc....

Our Nissan xtrail has a small cooler/fridge in the dash as well as the cup holders that is simply tapped off the air conditioning. I put a bottle of room temp water in it and it cools it very quickly, maybe not what you are looking for but an idea to consider none the less. Should be simple enough to rig up with some ducting.

The center console area gets bloody hot and wouldn't be to good for a fridge unless you put some effort into making this area cooler. A extended sump for the transfer and heat shields over the top of the gearbox.

can you get ready made heat shields for the gear box or do you have to make them up yourself?

I have fitted a rover drive transfer sump and went to super cheap and bought some heat shield that had to be custom cut to fit. I would like to get some more insulation as there's still heat transfer coming through the area.

G'day Pete,
Check out this link and see if it's what your after. The only problem I have is that the fan can blow hot air onto your leg on a really hot day, but then again with the heat coming from the gearbox area it's hard to tell. I've been meaning to make up something to deflect the airflow away but havn't got around to that yet.

I made a new console for my Defender which had a Peltier cooled section and a regular general storage section too.

With the fans running it was quite noisy but once installed the general Defender noise drowned it out.

I will see if I can find you the drawings I made (and the details I sent to the plywood place to cut the components) if you want.

As well as the centre console fridge by Engel and Waeco there is also one sold through Jaycar which is cheaper. They appear quite similar but I haven't compared the specs.

a number of older cars had frudges in the parcel shelf, toyota crown (and maybe cressida?) was one example, I assume these were 12v only so wonder if seeking one out would be worth while...

not sure what happened on the last message but it wont let me edit it

so lets assume that a frudge is an ugly fridge :D

Like the Freelander link you posted, the small units are just absorption coolers and not compressor fridges like the waeco that Marty has.
