Had the 130 in for a service last month at Bruce Lyntons, and mentioned that the 4 bolts that hold the snorkel to the wing section were rusty, and could i request they put new ones in, no problem, special order from the UK, 3 weeks later i get a email your bolts are here, cool so I nip in, Greeted by James ( who by the way goes out of his way to help you ) Come for the bolts I say, dont mind fitting them myself, oh no its a bigger job than that, we have to replace all your snorkel as the bolts only come as part of the snorkel kit.

Amazing!!!!!!!$860 to replace 4 Bolts....... ( plus there time )... No Wonder Land Rover lose money on the Defender....

Did they let you keep the old snorkel as a spare?

I did ask, and they may have to send it back to LR, or as they said, bin it......;)

Well done! I must admit that I cannot complain about the service I've received from them too in regards to warranty issues.. they haven't complained and have fixed everything promptly and with a smile.. they even washed it for me last time.. and I don't even get my car serviced there.. :)

That's great to hear Juddy, I have had mine serviced there from new and have found them very good.

It does make me wonder though. $860 for four bolts, no wonder I'm increasingly struggling to understand the world we live in.

Good news on the snorkel.

As far as loosing money, I had (as have many others) had my full rear door glass replaced due high level stop light not working.....go figure

If LR do things like this on a regular basis, than I can understand the failing of the current models diffs, g boxes, etc. These parts must be made for pittance in second world countries with apparent questionable quality control.
No accountant will happily sign off on a company spending such large amounts of money replacing such small bits if they cost anywhere remotely what LR charge for them.

Now I'm wondering, my block is rusty because it was never painted, my doors don't align, and my throw out bearing is noisy...reckon I could get a new car.

LR would not make the snorkel, so would not have any parts inventory. They would get it as a complete unit - hence replace it as one too. They would most likely not loose money on the warranty, but pass it back to the manufacturer as a credit or have a certain % failure built into their contract.

Drover,

There is something very fishy about that rear glass thing... Last time mine was in for a service (Corporate, so no bill) I got the "By the way your brake ligh wasn't working, so we replaced the window" line as well...

I actually thought they might have accidently broken the glass and replaced it, but your post puts a whole new spin on it...!

Same as mine regarding the stop light. I was unaware it was not working but had twice before complained about how badly fitted the inside of the actual light was. I also think they had a problem with the demisters on the rear glass only partially working on a few vehicles also.

If a dealer did this to me I would tell him to stick his bolts and go elsewhere, why couldn't they send an apprentice to the nearest bolt retailer with a sample and just replace the rusty bolts, that is so far past bull**** it's not funny, Regards Frank.

You could have had the bolts turned up out of Titanium and even machine polished for under a $100, mobs like Blackwoods have every bolt ever made by man in stock (well almost), so "special bolts" don't exist when any local machine shop could knock out in 5 mins., your local LR dealer has been yanking your chain, so how many other times have they done it, find a reputable repairer, Regards Frank.

I don't know what the problem is.. they replaced the whole snorkel at no cost.. for whatever reason (perhaps the bolts are attached to the snorkel somehow?).. either or it doesn't matter.. :)

Land Rovers loss comes back to bite us on the arse when they jack up car and parts prices to make up for the idiots that replaced your whole kit and kaboodle instead of just replacing the bolts, same as insurance, more claims means higher policy costs for everyone, how much of the cost of your new Land Rover is taken up to cover warranty claims, a lot if your experience is anything to go by, Regards Frank

Of course it matters, see post above, regards Frank.

you're missing the point frank, the snorkel is made by a supplier to LandRover, and certainly not by the LandRover dealer. if the dealer was to go and source the bolts and just replace the bolts, LR would not pay them for the bolts or their time, as its not LR's fault, its the suppliers fault, and they will just give the snorkel back to supplier and get a new one. the dealer has acted properly. a lot of places would have just said that it was normal wear and tear, and not a warranty item.

So who pays, who pays for the new stuff and bolts and the freight and the labour, WE PAY in higher car and parts prices. Do you think they have feelings for their customers and forked out at least $1k to make you feel good. For ****s sake wake up, there's no such thing as a free lunch, someone has to pay and it certainly isn't LR or the dealer, it's you and me, if you beleive your Warranty is free, at no cost to you, then you are living in Fairyland, Regards Frank.

I got a new screen last service also, never even noticed the light was not working, I guess if it goes out of warranty then it will be out with the tools.

so just to be clear, you feel the dealership that you complain to should cover the cost of the new bolts?

They should have supplied the bolts (from a local supplier of bolts) without going through all the bull**** to the customer, who said he was going to fit them and taken the few dollars out of petty cash, win, win no one loses, Regards Frank.
