View Full Version : Puma Instrumentation

After a couple of test drives of a Puma I began to focus on the interior aspects rather than just the driving experience:cool: and noted something seems to be missing!

The LCD display under the Tacho on the left seems to be disabled and blank? Have I missed something or is this a carryover from the Discovery dash where it is used?

Can it be used/activated as it seems kind of odd to have a dummy LCD display. I was thinking it would be great if you could get some instantaneous fuel consumption or range to empty functionality on the second display. The best thing I did to my current 'falcon' ute is install an ex-police full instrumentation cluster to keep an eye on the vitals.

Does the right hand display under the speedometer just do trip and odomoter or is there some other functions there too?

Also has anyone added any additional instrumentation such as pyro, voltage, oil pressure or boost gauges to the puma. I was slightly disappointed by the lack of voltage and oil but I note most modern cars don't have them either.

Thanks for any clarification anyone can provide.

Cheers Glenn

Sorry Dobbo for any confusion but not a LR ute....Ford Falcon ute and the instrumentation was out of a falcon police panel van. It also has a speedo that can be calibrated on the go too.

Cheers

LR use the same binnacle in the TDCi, Disco 3, and FL2. In the Disco 3 and FL2 the LCD is the trip computer. I wondered myself about changing binnacles or fitting a LCD but the binnacle holds a lot of information about the car and is not just a set of gauges and lights, so I imagine it would be very complicated to get it all to work.

Tim,
I wonder if it's all in the Defender ECU and would just require plugging in somehow.
I wouldn't mind knowing remaining distance on current fuel usage stats. Don't care for outside temp that much but if were a simple swap and plug it may be worth considering.

Might have a snoop on the UK forums.

Well the fuel tank size is loaded into the instrument pack so I guess it would depend on the engine ECU outputting the fuel usage data for a "trip computer", (including instant usage, distance to empty, etc), to work.....

Love the idea being proposed here, you guys have stimulated creative juices…again. Thank you.
It little bit off topic, but relevant I think.
Does anybody know if there’s a ‘manual’ or an exploded ‘part diagram’ available for the dash binnacle/cluster on the Puma’s?
I have a workshop manual but it doesn’t go in to any detail. I’ve been trolling the web for a while now without success. It’s for another idea I’m looking into.

Lorryman100 often comes up with that kind of stuff. I haven't seen him around lately.

@Newhue, I think you mean Lorryman100?? The screenshot I posted is from a BBS Faultmate.

edit: you out-search speeded me :)

I believe that the panel is for the warning lights... at least that's what the dealer told me when I ordered mine. :-S

Wow Tim what a great read, thanks for that. It really opened my eyes to what involved in the R&D for all these off the shelf items we (I) take for granted.
When it’s time to chip the Black Truck, BAS will get the nod. ;)

yes I think your right. I was thinking of the middle larger blank panel when I posted. From the loaner Freelanders I have had, that is where trip, fuel, ext temp etc is placed.

This site gives free access to the LR parts catalogue and may give you the info you are after. It is in Russian but Google Chrome translates the page for you.

Thanks Brian, great info and handy as.
What I originally wanted was to disassemble the dash binnacle and gauge cluster. To try and change the lighting colour from green to blue and add a dimmer in to the dash light circuit? I know it’s a bit ‘knobby’ but I just don’t like the green.
Anyway after reading the article the Tim sent from Peter Bell and by looking at the pictures of the rear of the binnacle, I don’t think my idea is practical. Printed circuit, plastic welded in to position, all intricate drives for the tech and speedo. To easy for a ‘ham fisted’ mechanic like me to bugger it up completely. Bests I leave it alone.
