Hi guys, I'm looking at getting a 02/03 L322 V8 petrol.
I've been reading about all of the problems people have around
the world but trying not to let it put me off.
I am very handy with a spaner had series land rovers as a kid
and still rebuild the odd engine and gearbox, but this will be my
first family car as I have my first kid on the way.
I work FIFO in WA so I won't be there to fix it all the time, was
wondering about things like the diff recall was that in Australia
or just overseas. Would you buy one if you were in my position
or is it best left as a toy for boys, Il be taking it bush don't care
about the paint but the mrs will need it as the only form of
transport. What do you guys think is it a good family wagon
what should I look out for? I will be looking in the $25-$35k range.

You should have plenty of options in your price range if you are after the V8 - plenty out there for sale, and good buying too. Diff recall should have been done if the car you buy has a full LR service history - it would be worth while making sure you do this.

Despite the reputation these cars have, they are quite reliable - remember they were made by BMW and there is some truly excellent engineering in them. The V8's have a different transmission to the TD6, and it is a little more reliable, but can still have some dramas - there are plenty of threads on this - particullaly on the overseas sites. There is quite a bit on the TD6 trannies here, but they are not the same.

Apart from that, find the one with the options you want, buy it and you will love it.:)

Don't believe everything you read on the net, after years of owning defenders and 75 series cruisers for work, I decided I wanted some comfort as a second, non work car, I hunted around for a diesel rangie, hard to find, but plenty of v8 petrols.
like any car, the previous use by the owners, service history and Driving style will play a big part in how a rangie will hold up in the future, as the previous thread said, BMW threw a heap of cash at land rover, and there is a lot of good reliable technology in these cars. I ended up buying an 04 td6 soccer mums car from Melbourne, and it's bloody fantastic.
One thing I find interesting is when people say, "there's too much technology and it's unreliable, I don't trust it", all new vehicles will have an ecu of some sort and if it or any sensors pack it in then 9 times out of 10, the car won't go anywhere anyway! I run trucks and earthmoving equipment for a living, I have a 94 model truck with a 500hp Detroit engine in it, it's got 1.9 million km on it, and has hardly missed a beat, it's all computer controlled, it's on airbag suspension and it's been totally reliable, the technology in the rangies is not new,all trucks have been running around with this technology for 20+ yrs.
I drive my rangie as hard as any defender or cruiser i have owned and take it anywhere within reason...in comfort.
Don't be hesitant in owning a rangie as a family car, you will never look back.

As Gav said. I had a P38 & decided to test drive a L322 just out of interest. Was very happy with my P38. Within 2 weeks owned a L322 TD6. Even happier now.:):):) They can have some issues but not nearly as bad as people say. You mainly here about the things that can go wrong. So don't test drive because if you do you will end up owning one :wasntme:
