hello Together,

It would be great if I could get some advice how to best connect my Camper Trailer (arriving in Mind July) electrically to my D3 TDV6 and what electrical fittings to request from manufacturer.

I bough the traxid (Cranking Battery To Auxiliary Dual Battery Kit + Two Power Sockets + High Current Extension) which I will get installed next week.

The CT will have a 12v battery and mechanical brakes and i would love to charge the CT battery also when driving and have the option to plug in a solar panel when stationary.

I noticed the Disco has two round plugs (white and black cap) next to the recovery point.

Do I need to run another cable from car battery with a Anderson plug to connect the CT or will the existing plugs do this?

Sorry not the most electrically minded person and trying to get my head around the whole set up.

Thanks a lot

Steve

Send a PM to Drivesafe on here, He is the traxide builder and he will no doubt tell you the best options for your needs, but most likely an anderson plug from the traxide unit.

Has the Camper Trailer manufacturer asked you to fit a certain type of plug to the vehicle?
We are finding many Caravan manufacturers are now asking for a 12Pin flat plug be fitted now.
I was speaking to a client who has had many vans over the years & the manufacturer has asked if he could fit a 12Pin plug to the vehicle.
He has also stated that this is happening to many "new" customers as regular customers have there set up already tested.

Has anyone else been asked this, be interested to know?

WRT the original post, we have been asked by many clients to remove the white plug & fit a 12Pin flat as this is becoming the norm so to speak.
But again you can fit any plug you require.

Cheers

I suppose the bigger plug saves the need for many.
I use the black 7 pin, an Anderson for the batteries, and a flat one for the rear camera. Might have to have a closer look at these.

Yes they actually said they could fit any plug, when looking trough the taxid installalation manuall it Mentiones a separated anderson plug run via cable from secondary battery I guess I was wondering whether I need to run the cable or rather could use the existing D3 cable and one of the existing plugs and then ask the CT manufacturer to just provide a connection accordingly?

On the other hand may be better to have the more compatible anderson plug so I can easily hook the solar panel up. I just trying to not have an extra cable sticking out there.

Hi folks and while these 12 pin plugs are being used, they are not really suitable.

First off, to be able to carry the sort of currents that will be drawn by low batteries, you need to use 2 pins for the positive and 2 pins for the negative.

But there is another problem with using these 12 pin plugs. They are not designed for Hot-Make-&-Break connections and you will eventually burn the contact areas of these types of connector which reduces their current handling capacity.

Anderson plugs are specifically designed to be able to handle Hot-Make-&-Break connections.

When you take into account both the fact that low batteries can pull high currents and if you have just started you D3 or D4, your alternator voltage can be very high, making the voltage difference between the vehicle and the batteries VERY high, this will mean a potentially huge current draw occurring as you connect your power to your camper trailer or caravan.

One additional word of warning, whether you get your Anderson plugs from me or elsewhere, make sure they are genuine ANDERSON plugs and not the elcheapo Chinese copies.

Theses copies are lucky to be able to carry half the current that of what the genuine Anderson plugs are designed to handle.

Ok great that solved the question will use the cable and Anderson plug provided with the kit I bought from you (should be arriving soon).

thanks for the help

Pity did actually forgot to mention that I'm a AUROL member when I purchased last week and we spoke :-(
