View Full Version : 300TDI Auto Turning over, not firing

Hi All,

I know this has been asked before but reading all responses I think I have most things covered other than checking timing.

Recently purchased: 300TDI Auto

It has fuel to fuel filter, IP and injectors.
I have drained sedimenter, some water came out, not much. I have bled filter and then to IP.

Nothing coming out exhaust pipe when cranking.
Turbo hoses all good.

IP fuel solenoid is clicking when directly powered with +12v, and wire going to solenoid is showing +12v so I should be able to rule that out considering I have diesel at injectors?

Car had new head and gasket replaced 8months ago, no oil in water, water in oil etc.
Other symptoms, previous owner driving along when it began blowing a bit of smoke, apparently white according to his wife behind but it was dark. Stopped it and got RAA to check. RAA could not find issue so it was trailered to previous owners home where, would not start again. Now its sitting in my driveway not starting either ;-)

Can timing be thrown out just driving along?

Any suggestions on what to try next?
Could it have dodgy diesel?
An IP porblem?
Anything else?
Air leak? - have checked hoses near firewall, cant find anything.

So far it has me stumped but I'm keen to learn Diesel engines, so far I've only spun spanners on Petrol engines.

Thanks,
Rez

timing belt may have jumped, it may also be low on compression.

Slipped timing without actually breaking a belt I think may be a rare occurrence, and I know the Tdi will run a tooth out if the timing was not set properly during a belt change and I don't think low compression just happens in an instant, your Diesel needs both air and fuel to run, if you're %100 sure you are getting juice at the injector unions then check the air induction system, the air filter or the turbo hoses could have disintegrated to the point of blocking the induction tract. The smoke that was seen before it was stopped could have been an excess of diesel trying to burn in not enough air, check all turbo inlet and outlet hoses, they have a rep for internal collapse and may look ok from the outside.

Found why it won't start :o

A few smashed rockers and bent pushrods.....

As it still turns over, could I assume the belt hasn't snapped but jumped several teeth?

Anyone got some spare 300tdi rocker gear hanging around?

fair bet...

now its time to redo all the valve timing and the pump phasing along with a new belt and tensioner set.

They dont usually do vavles or pistons but do a leakdown check once you have all the rocker gear off so you know all valves are supposed to be closed. If you get some very slight leakage give the valve tops on the leaking pot some gentle love with a small hammer to see if they just need a more agressive seating action than they had when they last closed up.

Dont forget to do the lash caps.

Follow up to show cause of damage...
Tensioner had a plastic surround which seems odd in such a vital part, anyway the plastic has cracked off which has allowed tension on belt to be less causing belt to skip some teeth and smash 3 out of 8 rockers and bent 6 of 8 pushrods.

Thanks to the tutorials on the forum, I have it running.

First time turbo diesel owner!

landrover have not supplied that type of pulley since 1998. there is a whole revised kit for that model. the main difference is the pulley with guide shoulders is now the crank pulley, be careful or the belt will immediately start rubbing on the casing.

Well done to get it fixed.

How many km has it done?

I have no idea on last belt change but interestingly the crank pulley did have guides on the edges the same as the mod kit I bought and the belt wasn't in too bad of a condition considering what had happened.

It has 287k on the clock.

For interests sake I used a Ford Escort (my other passion) gearbox reverse switch for the flex plate locking tool.
Worked a treat and cost me nothing.
