Choosing a new starter motor

G'day Guys,

Am looking for a new starter for my V8/LPG Disco and was after some advice on what to buy. There seem to be various aftermarket ones available around the $200 mark ranging from 1.4, 1.7, 1.8 kw output, does the higher the kw mean the better the starter? or should I just go the genuine Bosch replacement.

genuine bosch is the way .

Yeah your probably right that'd be why they are at least $130 more expensive than the aftermarket versions

Hi Robert,

I have a Discovery 3.9 V8, and had a bosch stater that failed (windings). I tried a non-bosch starter (jay*ec), however had the bendix gear (gear on starter that engages with ring gear on flywheel) chip away and fail at the 6 month point.
Not a good thing on an automatic; no roll start for you...

Now i have an (expensive, gearbox out and back in) replacement ring gear (was stuffed either because of, or before, replacing starter), and a replacement bosch starter.

make your own call, but based on my I experience, I carry a bosch spare :)

Drop a high torque TR8/SD1/Landrover gear reduction starter in, I was amazed at how much better it turned over and it was lighter than the original starter. I got a TR8 1.9 Horsepower Nippondenso Gear Reduction Starter machined specifically for the RV8. Part No.GRS-19-TR8 from Classic Car Performance in the US .

The TR8 and the Land Rover Starters are one in the same. Solenoid on the side or underneath does not mean anything as these starters can be rotated to your liking and for clearance.
