View Full Version : Biggest tyres on a 110

Hey. Just wondering what the biggest tires a mid 80s defender can run and what is required. By this I mean the biggest without doing an axle swap (unless bolt in and easily found) and without excessive customization of suspension. Also is it true the diffs in these are basically a dana 60? Much more familiar with the dana diffs due to being a jeeper. Deciding whether to go a jeep cj8 or a 110 converted to soft top. CJ8 can run about 35s but the pumpkins are pretty small so probably equivalent to a 36-7 on a dana 60. Also not worried about installing a lift kit, flares or cutting the wheel wells out a bit to make em fit. No idea whats needed though.
Thanks.

What state are you in?

The Icelandic ones have 40 inch ones :)

Victoria but it wont be a daily driver and I already know the legalities of lift and tires and whatever I gets gonna be illegal.
So the diffs can handle 40"? I realize they'll need upgrade shafts and a regear and maybe a truss and sleeve but that's ok.
Thanks.

I run 37s, with upgraded internals, the stock internals are pretty weak in the front, but the rear isnt to bad, the front is a rover diff and rear is a salisbury, basically a d60 - mine runs a ARB rd36 airlocker from a d60 in the rear now with huge 35 spline axles. I ran 37s on stock internals to start with and broke a few CVs and a centre and axle up front giving it a hard time, also broke one rear axle - but my truck had a hard life with poor maintainence before i got it and got a very hard time off road after i got it.

I have also seen a county on 40s here in Australia, it was running rover diffs front and rear i beleive, but it had toyota centres installed in the rover housings.

the isuzu has lower front stops. the back is the same but the rubber will tuch every now and again.

Alright 37s is about where I was thinking but later on with a bit of work I can run up to 40s?
One other question I had. In the US a lot of people "shave" dana 60s. Basically they cut the bottom of the pumpkin off and gain about an inch of clearance or the equivalent of 2" bigger tyres. Could the same process be done with a 110 diff?
Also what do you mean by Salisbury and rover diffs? Which is better and which is in the 110s and what do the other ones come out of and do they bolt straight in?
Thanks for the help.
PS what lift size for what tyres?

Salisbury(metric dana) was in the LR 110/130 /defender REAR till 2002 when they went with rover diffs all round. The front has always been a rover BUT the counties had a stronger CV than the later defenders but still will need stronger so look to ashcroft ,GBR, rovingtracks, lucky8 for better gear. Have a look at what cal has done to his county in members rides or talk to lowranger both have strengthened the internals to cope with bigger tyres. I have hytuff axles in my salisbury to cope with the detroit and 255/85 r16(33.4in) bighorns. Next big spend will be cv's and 4.11 gears front + rear.

So confusing learning about a different brand lol. So the Salisbury is a dana 60 and the rover is a completely different axle? Will check those rigs out. I'm looking to do 37s or a little more which will be comparable to a CJ8 on 35s.
While I was doing some more research I remembered I saw these (http://www.polyperformance.com/shop/Axeltech-D60-Portal-Conversion-Kit-p-20131.html) which are pretty affordable compared to other portal options but dismissed them since my current TJ has dana 30/44 and the cost of 60s would be out of my budget. Would these fit a 110? not afraid to do a bit of modifying or mix and matching but obviously I have no idea what it would take. Would rather spend $6k on portals than on a good 4" lift kit and the other bits required to run 37s or bigger.
Thanks.

They'd be $3250 per wheel wouldn't they? Got me salivating looking at that site :)

Per end actually which makes them pretty affordable compared to my experience with lift kits and associated costs. Poly performance is a great site and there's even a good reseller for them in Melbourne called double black offroad. They specialize in jk parts but I've got quotes from them for other things.
More importantly would those things fit? I found a defender kit but it's $12k or something ridiculous

Just put GU front and rear diff housings under it and be done with it,if you want to run with larger than 35" tyres with any sort of reliability.
Or by the CJ8 and put 35's on it,and blow them up when you try and wheel hard, and then you can spend a fortune and buy all the fancy stuff in the jeep accessory catalogue.Unless you are making a comp truck, you don't need anything larger than 35's on a defender/110 and you certainly don't need great suspension/body lifts.

Maybe Iain (Chook73) might join this thread.

I know that Iain is waiting for his portal kit to arrive from Germany for his 110 (PUMA) any day now. Daniel from Mulgo is doing the fit up.

From all accounts and knowing the work that Mulgo's Expedition Centre do, this will be very interesting project.

Well right now on 33s with little pumpkins im getting stuck because of the little tires. Dana 60 pumpkins are bigger so to get any increase in clearance I need bigger than 35s. Also from what I've learnt Dana 60s are stronger than patrol diffs. Do Salisbury have a weak point which Dana doesn't?
I'll keep an eye out for that project I reckon portals are an awesome idea.
I read through the ls1 110 build and that suspension and tire setup is pretty much what I want.

Well I paid a bit under that for mine (I played the exchange rate at the right time) and I have watched the development of these portals (Killer Axles/Tibus Engineering) for a couple of years now and I am very comfortable with what they have been put through on the vehicles they have been fitted on to date.

I cannot comment on the Jeep Portals except to say they are probably not going to fit the defender. If you go to marks adaptors you can expect to pay over $16,000 for the nissan version. Marks have however engineering approval for their portals in all Australian States which will save a bit of money. As I am the first in Australia with these portals I have to jump through a few more engineering hoops however I am using the same engineer as BrendanM so hopefully this will be just a formality.

I will be running 35" rubber which with portals and a 40mm lift should put the top of my headlight at 1190mm or just 10mm under the legal limit.

To my knowledge the Tibus Engineering portals are the only ones that come setup for CTIS off the shelf.

They also use a Mercedes G stud pattern which gives you a whole world of Hutchinson Military Beadlock Wheels to chose from if you so desire new wheels at the same time. Mine are from the pingauzer with a 63mm offset to increase the track to a legal yet more acceptable place for the portals.

Daniel (Mulgo) and Sam (Rangieland) are fitting the portals for me and Daniel has been in close contact with Wolfgang and I am currently booked into Daniels workshop when he finishes the TOYOTA  (sorry Daniel I couldn't help myself :wasntme:) which is looking like being towards the end of May.

I will then do some testing before I leave for a 13,000km trip at the end of June so stay tuned as I will post progress as I go.

Thats gonna be an awesome rig. If I was running portals id only run 35s as well. With the added diff clearance itd be plenty high enough. I really cant afford them though
