Lure In Fresh Water

Hi Guys,

Going camping this weekend and there is a creek with pretty deep holes running through the campsite. There are supposed to be fish in there.

I've only ever used flys and bait in fresh water but wanted to try some lures. Problem is, I don't know how to rig them.

They are the spinning reel type that flick and flutter through the water. They are set up to be tied a varies spots, for different depths or profiles I assume.

Do you tie the line direct or do you have to set up a swivel trace.....or am I off the mark completely?

Not too fussed about the outcome, just a bit of fun with the kids and my Bro-In-Law but would like to at least have a shot with the correct rig.

Any help appreciated.

It really depends on the type of lure your using. Some lures will twist the crap outta your line so a swivel is neccesary. I prefer to tie directly to the lure in most cases although I do use swivels when using ford fenders or attractors in front of the lure.. Swivels make life easier if your swapping out lures alot to find a particular pattern or color that their biting on.

I am lazy so I often use a snap swivel to make changing lures easy.

In SEQ / Nth NSW fresh water I have had most success with crayfish lures:

I tied directly to the lure but found that they didn't cast very well, so added a bit of weight further up the line.....is that the right thing to do?

Got a few bites but no engagements. The only guys that caught anything were using live yabbies. They caught some nice bass too.

Myself and the kids caught the bottom a few times.....and lost a few lures....but what the hey, it was fun. :)

Same. The Swivel just makes life a bit easier...

In VIC I've caught a few Bass on lures, but none on bright lures. They went for the dull ones, but that could be a North/South Oz thing... Bright coloured fishies are a QLD thing to me! In VIC all our fish are boring colours. :p

You really "shouldn't" need to put a sinker on with a lure. You could use lighter line on the rod, or use a lure that dives a bit deeper....

But whatever works really. If you're catching something with a sinker, keep it on. :D
