View Full Version : Move to Tasmania?
SimonM

My wife has this weekend expressed a desire to move, spurred on by me finding a job advertised in Launceston which may be of interest. I am not adverse to the idea, though it would mean abandoning the idea of being a beekeeper full time, at least for the time being, and remaining in the psychology field. No big problem as I rang up about the job and it sounds good - working with veterans and their families. There should be a few Land Rover owners amongst them surely :).
I have moved around a lot over the years and see it as an adventure and a great way to see the country, without having to wait for holidays to accrue. My wife is wanting to live in a city (though not a big one) rather than a small country town, whilst I am adaptable as long as I can get out for a drive in the bush, or a paddle on the water fairly regularly. Launceston seems to tick a few boxes for us.
We have never visited Tasmania though have always intended on going and have talked about moving there before. Moving there without having visited there ourselves is not a major fear for us, and it is something I have done many times before.
So from those that have been there or live there, what is Launceston like?

Hi Mr Ploppy,
Launceston is quite a liveable city. It is actually the 3rd oldest city in Australia after Hobart and Sydney. Population around 100,000, it has a big country town feel. Has pretty much one example of each big city store, ie. 1 Bunnings, 1 Myers, 1 Supa Cheap Auto, 1 Harvey Normans, 1 Target, 1 Office Works, 1 Land Rover Dealer, etc. There are 3 or 4 Woolies though and a few Coles supermarkets. There are no Westfield type shopping centres in the whole of Tassie. It has a good General Hospital, although increasingly under staffed.
The restaurant scene cannot compare to Hobart, let alone large Mainland cities, though there are a number of very good places to dine. Lots of excellent vineyards to the north and north east in the Tamar Valley
Like the rest of Tassie, the scenery surrounding Launnie or Lonny (as the locals call it) is great.
Winters are a bit colder and summers a bit warmer than the coastal areas. Launnie has a bit of a pollution problem in the middle of winter due to all the wood fired heaters and the fact that it is located in a valley.
Overally as I said quite a liveable city, though I personally prefer Hobart.

Visited there 21 years ago... was advised not to bother locking the car ; - and if it rains... some stranger would wind the windows up. - It did, and they did...:)
Don't think much has changed since...

I have probably spent 6 months living in Launceston- spread over 30 years ;)
It is diverse, although assimilating with the "well to do" would never be 100% as you were'nt born & bred in Tassy & more than one Taswegian has agreed with me on that.
I really love the town & people in it, if you can have employment there, my advice would be to go for it, it would take at least a couple of years to take it all in..

ive lived in Lonnie for the best of 30 years now and despite the lack of the larger outlets or the cafes etc its an amazing place. if your into white water paddling then only 10min from cbd is the north esk, one section that has caused many a person to go for a swim  country driving and 4wding is close on hand. if you have work here then i would go for it. in my opinion its better than Hobart as 2-3 hrs your anywhere from good beaches to the wild highlands or Hobart and the west coast.
Need any info or help with stuff in Lonnie, more than willing to help..
Cheers Tim

Hey mate - sounds good.
Now does anyone know of someone with a property near a heap of Leatherwood trees ? They will be rewarded with much honey :).
We keep going back and forth with our decision making. Do we stay close to family, help support the family bee business (BushRanger Honey - so good it should be outlawed :p), or take a bit of a risk and head off have an adventure in a place we are most likely to love, psychology or bees?? most likely both.
Decisions, decisions.

Re the possible move - like others have suggested, I'd say take the opportunity while your family is young - much easier to move around when the immediate family is not locked in to schools, friends etc.
Understand your concern about extended family also .................. but they can always visit or holiday down south.

Gday Simon, we moved from Brisbane to Hadspen (just west of Launceston) just over 10 minute drive to work in Launceston, we made the move near on 2 years ago now and do not regret it for a second, it is a fantastic life style and the people are very friendly. Mate if you wanted to keep doing the beekeeper thing there are so many properies for sale not very far out of town and the prices are so low (compared to the mainland) we have even played with the idea of selling this place to buy and acerage, have a couple of sheep and maybe a cow. As for LR's you see more of them on the road here than you do Land cruisers very strange site that is actually you do not see very many Toyotas at all, as for LR repairers in Launceston you have 3 to choose from the dealer others, we tried 1 of the others and now drive to see JC (Justin Cooper) near Hobart and that is well worth the drive.

On a serious note, there are some quarantine measures in place to prevent the spread of diseases

Please help us retain Tasmania's disease-free status by ensuring that when you visit us you are not carrying or importing any restricted items. The introduction of a pest or disease into a production area can result in expensive controls being implemented and loss of markets, which can cost primary industries and the community millions of dollars. Yeah mate good point. I did some reading up on the Tassie Bee situation. Very important not to introduce the small hive beetle from the mainland if you can avoid it, though over time it will probably get there unfortunately. Mind you the cold weather will help with their management.
That is ok I would be happy to build back up slowly if I had to.

I am back in Tasmania after 5 years in Qld.
I love this place, clean air, fantastic wilderness and full of opportunities for those that would like to start a new life.
For my money, one of the best areas to invest in RE is the Kingston area southeast of Hobart. It will be a satellite city with in 15 years or so and with a lot of potential to start anew business.
Near by is Blackmans Bay with very nice homes and fantastic views.

In 1964, the army took me away, during the 21 years in the green machine I married a girl from Wagga and when I was ready to get out of the army Tassie had the highest unemployment in Australia and with two teenage kids I saw Brisbane as the most promising future. Like most things there are pros and cons. After having lived here for the last 6.5 years, I feel I can give you an objective point of view. Here are my plusses and minuses:
Pros:
The environment is superb - beautiful mountains, amazing coastal scenery, terrific wilderness areas - all not crawling with hoards of people. On many beaches outside population centres, your footprints will be the only ones you'll see.
Peace and quiet.
Slower pace of life - I always notice this when I go to Sydney, one really notices how much of a rat race it is there. When I return to Tas, the moment I step off the plane or drive off the ferry, it feels like I've taken my foot off the accelerator.
Friendly people - folks here always have time for a chat, no doubt due in part to the previous point. The chances of someone running to your aid if you fall over, have an accident or even drop something in public is very high.
No traffic jams. Rush hour in Hobart or Launceston is like Sydney at 2.00am or better.
Outstanding fresh produce. Although sometimes expensive, you get premium fruits, veges, seafood and meat.
Cons:
Isolation. Because we are an island state, you can feel a bit isolated sometimes.
Inferior medical facilities and services. For any serious or major ailments you will need to go to the mainland. If you live outside the main cities (like I do), be prepared to book well ahead to see a doctor at your local medical centre. If it is something more serious, be prepared to have a long ambulance ride or flying doctor plane trip into town.
High unemployment - as a result of the closure or shrinkage of traditional industries like forestry, fisheries and manufacturing. This results in a lot of people on welfare, and because of the easy slow paced lifestyle, many people become long term welfare recipients. On the other hand, I know many people who want to work leaving the state for the mining rich regions of the country. I've also noticed a faily large number of long term "welfare refugees" from the mainland moving down here because of the easy relaxed lifestyle Tassie affords.
Expensive. Apart from real estate, just about everything is more expensive compared to the mainland - even local produce.
Limited availabilty for shopping. Lots of things need to be ordered in from the mainland and are not available off the shelf. I buy lots of things on ebay.
The state is in serious financial difficulty (I believe technically in recession). Government cutbacks in many areas including hospitals and schools.
Limited dining choices, although this is improving slowly.
You will just about never be a local unless you are Tassie born and bred. You will always be "from the mainland" even if you have lived here for 30 years. This parochialism is no doubt due to being an island.

Unfortunately no smoking hot girls toeier than a Roman sandle begging to give you a massage. Just a series of pools from cold to hot to work through. A sauner, a steam room, and if you like.....capable staff to press their knuckles into you and make you squirm.

Unfortunately the negatives mentioned is why we haven't moved to Tassie. As much as we love the place it seems a place for simple life style and not wealth creation. When the Federal gov injects $2 for evey $1 made in Tasie, its a slow sinking economy. And though money is not everything, it's opportunities for the kids as they grow just arnt there. It's a sad outlook unfortunately, but one many rural communities also suffer from on the mainland.
Still in saying that, moving to Tassie often comes up in conversation with the wife, wanting a simpler lie, and escaping the negatives of a big city.

Well said. No matter how much the locals go on with the mantra that "this is a great place to bring up kids", outside Launceston and Hobart (where there may be a few more opportunities), I'm afriad I couldn't disagree more.
I see so many kids around the town where I live whose idea of a good time is to get smashed every weekend and smoke dope. Teenage pregnanacy is rife.
Don't get me wrong, for young kids, this IS a great place for them to experience what nature has to offer, but once they are a little older, there is not much here to foster further personal development. Did you know that Tassie is the only state where all public schools finish at year 10? If you want your kids to do year 11 and 12, they need to enrole in college and move to town or commute. Is it any wonder that the percentage of students going for tertiary education is so low?
To be fair, I suppose this is a familiar story in most country towns, so it is not specific to Tassie.

My wife grew up in Tasmania. The reason they moved back to the big island was health problems due to the cold, and education / employment opportunities.
If you live near Hobart or Launceston you can now get cheap flights with Virgin or Jetstar.
For me to go home to Northern NSW it is a 7 hour / 600km car trip from Sydney.

Offer was too good to pass up and if not suitable (I was after a shorter one) then I'll move it on in 12 tonths or so.
Fred and Ros (LRE-NSW Club members) are also considering buying a touring kayak so we may need to organise a Club canoe trip some time. :D

Tassie is a wonderful place and is deeply embedded in my heart....
I wasn't born here but have been here for twenty years now since I was a kid, and in those twenty years I have spent a total of around a week outside of the island!
I love the place to bits but I am saddened to see the slide it is now in....we already had the highest unemployment but we are losing everything we had, more jobs are going casual, more people looking for work.
The work that is here is poorly paid.
I love it dearly but I'm seriously thinking of moving north....I know there are places in Vic that give Tassie a run for its money.

In late oct early Nov, we had 3 amazing weeks in Tazzie, did 2,900 km in the higher car and got to see a good amount of the island, I hate the city but quite enjoyed Launcestern, we stayed the first couple of nights at the Mecure on the east side of complex all good, and on our return we stayed on the west side "facing the CBD" and found out the the town clock chimes every 15 min all night and that every second car in lonny, has a 3" exhaust and from 17.00 hrs till 01.00 hrs every hoon fangs it between the lights every night, apart from that and the sad tassie zoo we absolutely loved it, had wild tassie devils feed from the back veranda ( road kill put out) and saw platypus swimming in the stream, prt Arthur was unreal, heaps of amazing water falls, Great Lakes , great :-) loved Sheffield, Hamilton had beautiful scallop pie from the bakers, strahan was fantastic, the people were so friendly every where we went, I could go on so much about this place, one sad thing is the locals are going the way of the tassie tiger...I've havnt seen so many smokers since the late 60s .....
If the economy changed I would LOVE to live there ...you locals have a truly wonderful part of the creation to live in...Gary

Actually Launceston has the highest air pollution in Australia, it is improving though with a reduction of wood heaters, if you would like to read the latest pollution/mortality rates PM me and I will send you the link, Regards Frank.

Went to school in Launceston (we used to live on King Island and I had to go to a "college" for the last couple of years of high school as previously pointed out) - loved Launceston then and always have since.
Family bought a house in Kingston a while back, but we've since got out of there and now have a couple of houses over the river at South Arm - mine's virtually on the water (we can see Kingston from the front verandah) and the other is only a few doors up the road - another great area. The view out the front of the house is fantastic - virtually look straight across to North Bruny and Tinderbox, and when it's clear we can see straight through to Snug. Have only been there once at the right time of the year so far to watch the Sydney to Hobart yachts sailing straight past the front of the house, but there's always plenty to see on the water. Can't see the city from our place, but a short 5 minute walk along the beach to the point and you can look straight up the river to the bridge (not a bad little spot for flathead either).
Brother in law has recently bought a house in Snug and he loves it over there.
We love South Arm - far enough out of town to be almost "rural" but close enough to be able to get to anything we need to within half an hour or so.
But have to agree with comments previously made on opportunities for kids, particularly as they get older. Our son in particular has had much better opportunities in Kalgoorlie than he ever would have in Tassie.
Ours is now a mixed lot - we live in Kalgoorlie, wife has a business there and both kids working there - I work from an office in Perth and commute to Kal regularly, but also travel a lot with my work. We get home to Tassie whenever we can (usually every couple of years or so) and would like to make it more often. But the opportunities are over here at the moment. But we're definitely looking forward to the time (rapidly approaching) when we'll give up the lifestyle over here and return to Tassie permanently. Think I'll have to invest in a boat when I get there. Other than around Albany WA, there's nowhere else in Australia that I'd consider ending up in. :)

What's the best thing to do with a small tinnie? Go trout fishing !!

Mr. Ploppy, hope you enjoy you stay in Paradise, be sure to travel up the East Coast via Orford, Swansea, Coles Bay ,St Helens et.al. but before you do give yourself half a day in Hobart to visit MONA, a cornucopia of visual delights the like of which you will probably never see again(big call) if you haven't done so already.

One thing I have noticed over here is the abundance of Land Rovers, especially Defenders. Went for a paddle in the kayak this morning from Snug, the water was beautifully clear, and surprisingly not too cold. I will definitely enjoy the kayaking around here. We then headed off to visit JC and book in for a check up. Whilst at Kingston we sampled the cafe. Then off to Huonville and surrounds.
Everything so far points to a good decision to move here.

Last march we bought a place in Kingston and we are happy with the location.
Kingston is a place full of developments and I think that is one of the best places for investment because the convenience of the shops and facilities and also is 12 km from Hobart CBD.
If you like a bit of bush and a view to died for it IMO Tinderbox is the place to be. Is next to Blackmans Bay and just down the road form Kingston.

Hey,
I was in Tassie for a month before Christmas and loved it and really wanted to stay longer. I was looking for casual work but there literally was NOTHING around. I am a trained forester back home in Ireland and I was looking long term at trying to find job there but that is another industry that has been distroyed and will probabily never recover....
Its a real shame as I would have loved to stay/move there permanently.

Yes, Foresters are leaving Tassie in droves at the moment....soon the only foresters you will see here will be wearing Subaru badges!
MONA is something you must see....it is unique!

That's how it is meant though, to be deliberately controversial and make you think.

I grew up in Launceston and it was the best place as a kid ever. At one time we were heading back but got waylaid in Coffs and we have been here ever since.
It is truly a clean green place and now with the food and wineries it is heaven. I will head down there for a holiday soon, as you cannot see all of the island in a lifetime.
My memories are of real cheddar (unpasteurised), scallops, crayfish and many more things from the 50's and 60's; not forgetting Brisbane St on a Friday and Saturday night.

You'll still be close enough to the coast even working/living in the Launceston area. I'm out the back of Cressy & work in Mowbray and the coast isn't too far away. Actually I'm going for a run out to the east coast tomorrow.

Yeah I know we won't be too far from the coast but its nice to be able to drop in close to home. We drove to George Town today and back down the other side over Batman Bridge, with a nice little tidal race happening in the river from the wind against the tide.

Checked it out today Adam. Man they have some serious honey products. They also had an old steam capping machine from Penders I think from the 1940s, they are still going in NSW, we used to get some of our stuff from them.
We sampled a heap of honey and bought some leatherwood icecream and blue gum ice cream nice.
If you like honey the Honey Tasmania store in Launceston just down from Holy Guacomole mexican restaraunt has some lovely raw honey. They only sell honey that has not been heated I believe, and that is the stuff to go for IMO.

welcome to Tasi & more specifically Launceston.
re pollution; i grew up in Lonnie & it's far better than it was 40 years ago, almost non-existent, we do get some fogs in winter due to it being next to the river, but they clear pretty quick these days.
have a look at Prospect, West or South Launceston to get you above the fog.
good luck with the job, and may see you about.

Hi Simon and Co
Allan and Sue will be over at Launceston by tomorrow afternoon on their way to Derby. They are having a bad run with their laptop not connecting to the web and their mobile phone went walkabout then didn't return, so they have some communication issues at the moment.
JC, that's the reason why I couldn't get down to see Paul tomorrow, because Denise and myself will be travelling with them up to Derwent Bridge to have a look at "the Wall".
Then having a meal depending on the time, either at the Derwent Bridge wilderness Hotel or over at the Great Lake Hotel.

Good luck with it all. Don’t go as far out as Hadspen the road to Launceston is troublesome in winter with ice fog and floods. Look at Perth if you are looking out of town, steer clear of Mowbray Ravenswood and Mayfield no offence to anyone who lives their some parts are bad others are great. The prospect Blackstone Summerhill Newstead Youngtown Invermay new parts of Newnham are the better areas just like any neighbourhood. If you looking to rent contact elephant property and ask for Jamin. If you need a hand at all just give me a call 0400662681. And if you ever need parts transported from Hobart I seem to be going their weekly at the moment just wish it was in my Land Rover.

Glad you liked it my son loves there Ice cream and honey BUT if I put honey in his sandwich he won"t eat it:mad:
As for pollution I have both wood and electric and most of the street has wood and after doing all the sums a split system or heat pump as there known here is the way to go as long as its wire to hydro power
As Im in the lower area I dont get alot of fog but friends of mine who live in summerhill and prospect they seem to get it or maybe its us swamp people doing it:angel:
Depending on what you want there are good and bad area's in each area like Mowbray and Prospect but if u like a house just ask and we can let you know what the area is like
I would move into launceston or very close to it but a couple of things stop me, small streets, next to no parking, most house's only have parking for one car (fine for you) and little or no yard space but each to there own, Im in Invermay just behind BP of Invermay Rd and from my house to the mall in town at a good walking pace takes 35mins give or take

Ah, good point about black ice I'd forgotten about that, but it happens down here too with the southern outlet so anyone coming from the Huon into work has a good excuse come icy days:p I remember towing an Audi back up off the shoulder and over to Sandfly road (Near Longley) once as my RRC was the only 'mobile' vehicle at the intersection one white morning :)

I grew up in Reid St Kings Meadows and was a nice area and just above the winter inversion layer.
There are some nice places up that way on the hill and is not far from town.
I was heading back there a few years ago but spent a few weeks in Coffs and have not left yet.

It all depends how far you want to travel. I too would recommend Hadspen in the west, Lilydale in the north and down towards Perth/Longford in the south.
Ice is a fact of life down here, and you'll just get used to it. The locals all slow down in the areas that have trouble, and after a few months you'll have it all worked out anyway.
It's not that bad until you get onto the secondary roads which don't see the traffic that the main roads do.
I moved out of town because of my eldest suffering with bad asthma. Wasn't worth the risk to me.
Actually thinking about you enjoying sea kayaking, then I'd look to the north. It would put you closer to the coastline. If it's river kayaking you are after, then look towards Longford as you won't get any better rivers than up the mountain or on the west coast.

It is what makes it great Andrew. Since we have been in Tassie I have had more phone calls from forum members than our family or friends combined.
Sarah has suggested that in return we should put on a BBQ, so keep an eye out for that when we get a house. Also if anyone wants to try out some sea kayaking, I am also happy to help out. Actually just about to hit the water at Dodges Ferry.

I think I saw you the other day, in Hobart or might have been south of Kingston. Gave you a wave (Defer 110 with rack and antennas). I did not recognise your vehicle, did not see the rego.
Either way, Welcome to you and the family!
There is a Rover club in L'ton.
LROCT from Hobart do trips all around, including the N.E.
AGFEST in early May should give you a good grounding on suppliers and contacts for DIY in rural life.
TARGA in mid April is good to see some on-road rallying around most of the State.
You will probably have noticed that our fuel prices do not cycle on a weekly basis down here.
Hope the job is fullfilling.

I've been reading this thread purely out of curiosity, and am glad to hear its going well, but now I have a reason for posting. The Navigator and I are flying into Launceston on April 4 to spend 9 nights wandering about with the BIL and SIL who are down there for 6 weeks towing their caravan with their (warning, mention of non-LR follows ) - Triton.
So, given that they're towing a van, he's rather fussy about not scratching the very shiny near-new Triton, and we just want to have a happy little cruise around doing relaxing touristy stuff, what would you recommend? We fly into and out of Launceston, so the trip will start and end there. We know nothing about the area.
Any suggestions?

Where to start mate, just for info sake its 2.25hr to Hobart, 1 hr to Devonport and nearly 2 hrs to Bernie, 1 hr to the top of the western tiers ( the lakes Arthur and great lake) around 1 hr to the west coast, now the thing is that is straight through driving and that is where we got caught on our original holiday in 2010, there is so many things to stop and see on the trips that it takes more than just driving to the destination. What i would suggest is if you are staying for the 9 nights travel down to Hobart for half the come back to Lonnie for the remainder. or if you would be planning to come back do Lonnie then come back and do Hobart next time. Where are your friends staying as the carvan park down the road had a triton in it.

Simon - let us know where you end up. For info there is the Lilydale Festival of Wood this weekend (between 1000-1600h both days).

Hi Mick, stay a couple of nights in Hobart . Maybe a day trip down the Huon Valley for rural sightseeing and you must visit MONA for the visual experience of a lifetime. Salamanca Market in Hobart on Saturday mornings is interesting. Travel back to Lonnie via the East Coast for beautiful beaches and coastline, maybe a night at Coles Bay.
Visit a couple (or lots) of wineries.
Most importantly have a great time.

BTW, the Pizzas at the Red Restaurant are fantastic:) We'll be in a BBQ!

We have been meaning to get to the Red.
The Perentie is a family we met who have also just moved over from the mainland.
We are thinking a Saturday lunch get together, rolling on to whenever, likely to be in May sometime.

Wish I'd read this earlier. Was in Deloraine today as my in-laws all live out there and a bit out of town.....
Word of warning - be very careful on that highway of a morning. The fog seems to bring out clowns everywhere. There was a pretty serious crash not far from here near Carrick this morning - damn lucky no-one is dead after that one.
BTW if you want to get that vehicle of yours dirty and into low range, then let me know :)

Chris I saw a 110 parked in town after lunch, up from the deli.
Will be keen to hit the tracks in a few weeks time. It's funny I had just been reading some of your trip reports. Would be keen for a snow trip.

What time were you out that way?
I went for a bit of a bush walk up the Western Tiers around lunch time and we drove back through that way :p
Sing out when this BBQ is on, I'll see if I'm about somewhere. Only trouble is I won't be able to bring a Landy ;)

Just like to say, after nine days in Tassie, I can certainly see why people like it there. Flew into Launceston, met the rellies and did a big loop south, across to Hobart and Port Arthur and then back up to Launceston again. We barely scratched the surface, so we will be back! Anyone who says they can 'do' Tassie in a short ime is kidding themself. Bit concerned though that a longer Tassie holiday could just turn into a marathon tour of wineries and cheese factories...

Unfortunately I'm not allowed to partake of the pleasures of a brewery tour any more - and the chocolate factories - well it's only SWMBO who gets enjoyment out of visits to those places these days (much to my displeasure). :(
We'll be back there later this year - taking an 8 week break this time, but that includes travel to and from, and we're planning a bit of a trip through the south east of the mainland on the way across. Not sure whether we'll be towing a camper trailer this time - last trip we snapped the draw bar just outside Devonport (could have been nasty had it completely let go). Might just be the Oztent and camping gear on the roofrack this time round - we have a house on the outskirts of Hobart and will be basing ourselves there.

Ok BBQ at our place on Saturday May 25th. Kicking off around lunch time, I will keep the BBQ in action for whenever people show up. We will supply some food and drinks, when I know numbers I will work out what we can and can't provide.
Rather than posting my address here let me know if you intend coming and I will send you the address. You will have to pass a psychological screening test before being allowed entry, although Land Rover ownership immediately proves something :p.

I might have to miss that one, Simon. I have a kayak race on Lake Narrabeen the following day. :D
Good to see that things have worked out well for you and the family. It's a pity things didn't work out so that we could visit more places together back in February. Maybe Sue and I will have to plan to drop in when the next AWBF is on in February 2015.

Hi Andy! That Black D2 is nothing like yours! At least yours gets some maintenance!!! Last time I saw that vehicle it looked like it had a blown head gasket, and was using litres of coolant a week. That was almost 2 years ago now:eek:. I am surprised it is still running but maybe he had it fixed finally. It doesn't belong to the food critic fellow.
You'd love it down here, at least for most of the year. I am really not enjoying the cold at present and it hasn't really got COLD yet, either:(

I may have to wait until retirement or blessing from the Lotto godz.
Cant see me earning what Im accustomed to earning over here steering graders for a Shire. Its a job I really enjoy and dont really want to do something different at the moment.
Perhaps a holiday over there when my long service leave comes up in the next couple of years to start the ball rolling.

Then when you come you have a base camp to explore.

The Wife is home. She has just clocked up sixteen and quarter hours without a break, We are both going crook about the lack of staffing structure at the little fourteen bed hospital, that doesn't have standby staff available when someone calls in sick.
Why didn't I buy a block in Adventure Bay thirty years ago !
The real estate prices are better elsewhere around the Island, Adventure Bay prices are well out of reach of those who haven't a spare million.
But ! My mate Tony still has his block in Sawdust road.

Arthur, that it is not a very good quality of life for both of you.
Perhaps with your wife experience she can look after few old people at Bruny and enjoy life in a much better way.
One of the problems at the island is not enough services and health care.
Build a couple of holiday shacks with shipping containers like THIS (http://goingcoverless.wordpress.com/2012/07/12/container-homes-2/) and you are set

Cheers Guys.
In Albany we can get properties that were $750000 plus several years ago for around $400000 now, however they are at the bottom of the downturn and now are starting to sell again so the upward price trend will continue.
Those couple in the $300000 range seem good.
