G'day all,

haven't been on the forum for a very long while....... I guess that happens if one is entirely content with one's vehicle. Just thought I'd drop in and say g'day and announce that the very faithful Disco 3 is on the market. She's been a truly excellent fourby and has worked much harder than the designers intended.

In fact, I just found out a couple of months ago, after putting my caravan over a weighbridge for the first time ever, that the dear old Disco has been pulling four tonnes most of its life. Tch tch. I always wondered why it preferred to go up gigantic mountains at 60 KPH instead of flying over them at 90 KPH? Oh well!

So, after five and a half years of doing better than I could ever have wished for, the old girl is making way for a Disco 4. Yep, I'm hooked. I've never purchased the same make of 4WD twice in a row, even during 21 years of continuous fourby ownership, so this is a first for me. I guess it is a good indicator of just how highly I rate Landys.

Going up-market and getting the HSE spec this time, as well as getting the locking diff, which I didn't bother with last time. I'm not going to bother with a 'roo bar, winch, rear bar and tyre racks or rear drawers this time. I've got to shed some weight. I will definitely be getting another long-range tank, Expedition Rack and Raised Air Intake though.

The new one is being built this month for a July/August delivery. Even the Minister of Finance and War has approved the purchase.

Cheers

Russ

Half your luck my friend !!
Landies tend to have that effect don't they, if you are the type thinking person who can appreciate them you just can't see the sense in anything else!

Would be interested to know how you're planning on putting a long range tank in the D4 without a rear bar or some type of spare tyre carrier on the back. I'm looking at the same for my D4 - not overly keen on a full new rear bar, but want to mount the spare on the back somehow so that I can put a long range tank where the spare is currently mounted.

IMHO a Bullbar is a must though. I felt sort of "naked" driving mine between Perth & Kalgoorlie, especially at night, until I had an ARB and some decent lights on the front.

You'll enjoy the D4 though, whatever you do. Mine is my third Disco in a row - I've also had a lot of Toymotas - and the only thing I seriously considered as an alternative to a new Disco this time round was a VW Amarok.

Congrats on the purchaser. Getting approval from the Minister of War and Finance is always a good thing. ;-)

That's a great story!
What engine was / is in the D3 and which engine for the D4?

My van is Kedron "Top Ender" which is supposed to be 3.5 Tonne fully laden. I've taken everything out of the bastard except the water in the water tanks and it weighs exactly 3.5 Tonne like that! In other words, no payload???

I propose to get rid of the lead-acid batteries and replace them with LiFePO4 batteries which will be one third of the weight. I will also be flogging the 2.4 KVA generator that we never use. After that I'll probably have to travel with one water tank empty all the time...and so on.

I'm keen to get things "legal" before we hit the road again.

Cheers

G'day. Nothing technical about the spare tyres, they'll both go on top of the expedition rack. Might end up being slightly over the rated carrying weight of the roof rack, but I'll live with that.

We thought long and hard about the 'roo bar and decided to go without because we never drive at night anymore (for any reason.)

G'day

The D3 has the 2.7L diesel and the D4 will have the 3.0L diesel.

My dad has a D3 and it pulls like a freaking train. Can only imagine what an extra 300cc will do.

I had a 2006 D3 with the 2.7 litre motor and thought that it was great. (I got used to the lag in the engine and compensated without thinking about it.)
Traded theD3 in on a 2011 RRS with the 3 litre motor and it is superb. The extra 300cc's are only part of the story it is the new twin turbo setup that gets it moving with no turbo lag at all. The small turbo spins up immediately with absolutely non of the lag in the 2.7 engine.
