View Full Version : The Dilemma

Hi Everyone, i need some help to influence a pretty big decision.
Right now, i have a 1998 300tdi Auto Discovery, bought it off my aunty and it has 323,000km on it, just put new rings and injectors in it to make it go like new again, the car originally came from our dealership so it has been in the family it's whole life, i have plans such as making it into a ute/offroad toy etc, but right now it only has a little bit of gear on it (winch, nudge bar etc.)
BUT
Mum has a 2001 D2 Td5 Manual, absolutely beautiful original car, with only 170,000km on it, dad is looking at getting her a new Freelander 2, so the D2 will become redundant, leaving the oportunity for me to buy it as a blank canvas, and it certainly goes a lot better than my Tdi and uses less fuel.
Basically i have 2 options, keep the tdi (let the rego lapse as it is due soon) and buy (pay off over time) the Td5 and drive that instead and do it up a bit to make it a bit of an all rounder (touring essentially). OR sell the Tdi, buy the td5 (completely) and then just have the 1 car. The thing i don't like about the whole thing is that i don't want to sell my cars (i want to collect them). And it would be nice to keep the D1 in the family as it is uncannily solid and reliable and i love the thing, would certainly make a good ute one day.
HELP What should i do????
Cheers
Will

Well, you gave the answer yourself already, didn't you? Keep the D1 and take over the D2. Negotiate a fair deal with your old man. You simply don't sell a Landy that belongs to the family. Never...

I'm liking that idea aswell, i might let the rego on the old girl lapse, as it will need a blue-slip anyway when i make it a ute, i have to decide whether i should take it and leave it at the farm or not though. I'll see if dad will let me have the car and pay it off slowly, that should be okay with him i hope, the D1 is worth more to me than what i'll get for it, just have to watch my pennies (i'm only in year 12) and leave the modding for later on.

Thats what HECS is for haha, i'm gonna need to save up for a big garage, when i was working on the tdi, nothing of dads was in there lol he was a bit annoyed, the veteran was under the carport, my buggy and my buggy trailer and my disco were all in there (and they were all a work in progress at that stage). Now to go and get a good HSC so i can be a mechanical engineer and afford it all LOL.

I have decided that if i end up with the D2, i'll sell the D1 and buy the D2 (after i take all my goodies off the D1), that allows me to buy the D2 and have a few less projects (money pits), plus i'd really like to build a v8 manual Defender 90 soft top, i'll let someone else enjoy the Disco. It's too good a car to chop up, and i don't really need a ute. Shame really i like it, but i have to think realistically.

Why ? I would have thought a D2, even an 11 yo one, is a better vehicle than a Freelander could ever aspire to be ? Am I incorrect in thinking Freelanders are a complete piece of junk that no sensible person would ever want to own ?

You are incorrect. If one has no intention of actively off-roading in the league of say a LC/LR/Patrol, then a new FL2 is an incredibly comfortable, 40MPG, decent vehicle to own that won't get bogged at the MCG carpark in winter.
That's about as much offroad as some people require.

As mentioned in the last post - you are incorrect. The Freelander II is a very good vehicle and doesn't suffer any of the issues the F I did. Drives very well, stops even better, and if you only want a soft roader, does the job very nicely. We almost bought one, but dickhead me let SWMBO drive a Range Rover... so that was that...:p

Well its basically a point of need, we (mum) don't need a heavy 4wd anymore, if we do a big trip dad would buy a Defender anyway (he's done that in the past) the Disco was only ever really for towing the old cars, seating 5 comfortably, going offroad occaisionally (when you own a dealership you bring home a Defender when you want to go proper 4wding), and also for going away and to the snow each year, the Disco has done all these tasks superbly but now that dad has a D4 as a work car, we don't need to run 3 (theres actually 4 Disco's at home atm LOL) big 4wd's, so if we offload my old one, and i buy the D2, then we can still use that if we need to tow something big, or go offroad (it will get modded a little bit, basically with the bits that come off the D1). Dad was selling LR's when the first Disco came out and the Freelander, over the years mum has had a veriety of these 2, we kept this Disco though as it just kept going, i've driven a few FL2's now and they are an excellent little car, would be good on the beach, really zippy and fuel efficient, we could still tow the little old cars and my due buggy etc with it, and make the snow trip, but it's definietely time for an update, and i'm kinda over slow automatics to be honest, especially as a daily driver, so something has to go. But yes i disagree that Freelander is a pile of junk, they're really good at what they are designed to do (my Disco 1 which came from my aunty was replaced with an FL2 aswell) sure the old ones were pretty crap, but the design principle was all there, just badly executed. Its for a different market to Discovery

Thank you all for the update. My only experience(s) have been with FL1 petrols and I have not been very impressed.
SWMBO was considering 'updating' the D2a and liked the look of the FL2 and Suzuki Grand Vitara (same dealer) but I warned her off the FL. Like Wills parents we no longer need the D2a for 'real' off road work, hasn't been off road for 3 years.
All the best for whichever decision you make Will, but owning two cars can be an expensive proposition. Try not to put yourself in a position where you can afford to own 2 vehicles but don't have enough cash left over to get either to the state you want them. Can be very frustrating. Would you be better off to park up the D1 for later or to sell it and put the money towards getting the D2 to where you want it ? The old head vs. heart argument.
Again, best wishes for for whatever you decide.:)

Thanks Deano
Yeah when i was thinking with my heart i wanted to keep both, but it's not really financially viable for someone who will be a uni student next year, i'll just have to sell the D1 and get a small project or something once the dune buggy is finished, that way i can actually buy the D2 aqnd have some money left over to save for a house, and make the D2 into the car i want, as it will inevitable get driven on the highway a lot going to uni. We'll see how things pan out, but it looks like the D1 will have to go, plus with 2 landies you have twice the chance of having to do a complete rebuild LOL. I'll strip the goodies off it though and put it back to stock so i can use the parts on either the D2 or other projects.
Cheers

As a student it would certainly be better to only have one vehicle draining your money.
The other option would be to keep the D1, forget about a D2 and pocket your money.

haha, yeah definietely only need 1 car on the road, but if i go to wollongong uni, i want the td5 as the tdi is a slug on the highway and driving up mount ousley every day would get pretty old, not to mention the better fuel economy of the td5, i'd always planned to buy it and the tdi was more of a stop-gap to fill the space between me getting my licence and mum getting a new car, just so happen s that thing grew on me and i became attached to it, might need to do a blue mountains trip before i sell it though lol

If you are looking at it that way, you'll be in for a little surprise.

How so?, the td5 manual Disco gets about 10.5l/100km round town, my tdi auto is lucky to do 13, thats with me driving and i drive pretty hard, td5 is also heaps better on the highway, and you can sit on the speed limit up all the hills, probabyl eventually chip it too, but that will only make the economy worse

My tdi auto gets about 10-11, so maybe there is a problem with yours.

Its just had new injectors and rings, i think its more to do with the mass of my right foot and the weight effect it has on the right pedal, spends a lot of time welded to the firewall. The tdi is fantastic offroad and still beautiful on it, its extremely long lived and reliable, but for hoghway driving it gets a bit tiresome, the acceleration is pretty dreadful and when you hook one of the trailers onto it it just gets worse, rapidly. I need a car to do everyhting well and that hwy i want to change to a td5, i know it will cost more in maintenance, and be a little less reliable, but for me the benefits outweight the disadvantages and sadly i will have to let my lovely tdi go to the next sucker (i mean blessed owner) would have loved it for a project, but i am into buggies and i think if i made an offroad rig i would base it on Suzuki Sierra axles with a tube frame and maybe a motorcycle engine, a Discovery is too big a project, especially if it wasn't registered, maybe later in life. But we're all cool with suzukis as Garthon's did sell them for a while, i'de be shot of i bought a tojo (not that i'd ever want to)
Cheers

I would also suggest that there is a problem with your Tdi if you only get that miserable fuel consumption figure from it. Should your driving style be the culprit, as suggested by you, then you will have to expect at least similar figures from the Td5. The choice is yours...

I like having two, that way when one is parked up in the driveway getting some attention i still have a Land Rover to drive. It has become a bit of a joke in my family because everytime I decide to do some work on one of the cars it seems to take me a few weeks, saves on running costs ;). Sometimes you have got to go with your heart, always making decisions with your head leads to a boring life in my opinion - or maybe that is just my head :(.
