how do i change the drivers door glass?

as above, what is the best way to change the window glass in the drivers door of a pre update D1? Does the top door frame need to come off?

Its not the easiest thing to do but its easy once you've done it a few times.
you have to do the following
1. obviously remove your door trim etc

2. wind your window to the point where you can see the bottom of the window in the lift channel (where the window attaches to the window winder mechanism

3. undo the 2 bolts that are on the front and rear of the bottom if the window ( from memory they are 8mm)

4. you have to remove the door frame top. so remove the side mirror internal cover and unplug the mirror motor, undo the frame retaining bolts, locations 2 of those stupid hex bolt thingies on the top front and rear of the door, 2 x 10mm bolts along the line where the door trim clips are about 1/2 way down the door (could be under that sticky door goo), and last but not least 2 x 10mm bolts on the inside of the window channel right down the bottom.

5. with the help of someone else to hold the glass still, lift the door frame up and away from the door (it may need to be giggled to allow it to break free.
6. gently remove the the window glass from the door.

It should all be on the rave and in the usual workshop manuals.

I find once you have the bolts out if you then lower the window to about 2/3rds down you can then lift the window frame out unaided. then lift the glass out.

While its out get into the slides for the topframe inside the door with a wire brush and onto the frame itself give them a thin coat of rust kill, a good enamal, let it dry up nice and hard then hit them with a little dryglide before re-installing.
