Has anyone got or know of a rear bumper with a winch in it? I am looking at fabricating one after searching for one with no luck. I could use some help with drawings and diamensions of bars that others have made. Thanks in advance..Cheers Joe

I have seen some that fit into the tow bar tube. You would just need to run heavy wire to the back and a plug so you can remove it when not required. Some guys in the P38 section have made up a front discreet winch using this principal.

Thanks I've seen those frames but where do you store the winch when not in use.... and it decreases the departure angle if left on this was my first thought..

This is the only company I know of that are doing rear winch bumpers, it is pictured for a D1 but they are happy to do a D2 version as well.
HLC Fab (http://www.hlcfab.com/products.php)
Also here is a design for one I have been working on for my D2, however it does require modifications to the standard towbar and is designed with a body lift.

The issue you will have on a standard D2 is not enough height for the winch, the HLC fab one would work but it means the rear bumper is very big and protudes further out than the standard D2 bumper would.
The only other option if you have an engineer than can help is to remove / modify the rear chassis crossmember to be able to fit the winch in.

Thanks Chris - love your bar design, have you removed the standard tow bar completely?
I have ordered a 4" lift kit from the USA http://www.rte-fab.com/products?page=shop.product_details&flypage=yagendoo_VaMazing_zoom1.tpl&product_id=265&category_id=12 (very helpful and easy to deal with company) I will crawl under the old girl today and have a look at the cross member.
I have a long range tank under there hopefully everything will fit...Thanks again.

Thanks,
I wanted to do a rear bar similar to the XROX bar I have on the front and get as much rear quarter clearance as possible.
I have kept the standard tow bar, however the standard rear cross member mount requires cutting and inclusion in the new bar.
The bar gets mounted by the tow bar cross member mount, the two standard chassis mounts as well as load being distributed through the tow bar bracing further along the chassis.
The tube wings will also be braced to the chassis from the side quaters to provide additional strength and minimise any upwards flex if landing on a rock etc.

What shocks are you planning on using with the lift?
Also, with the long range tank you may find you dent it a fair bit as I assume you are looking at harder off-roading due to the rear winch. I was going to fit a long range but have most likely decided against it for that reason.
I may look at small sill tanks in the future (40l each) if I can incorporate decent bash plate / chassis sliders into them and the rock sliders I already have.

I am still undecided about the shocks been reading a lot of reviews thought I'd go down the Tough Dog avenue this seems to be one of the hardest decisions. I am also going to insert air assist bags for loads and heavy off road. Sent an email to Tom Woods re drive shafts waiting for a reply.
My LR tank has been hammered so I'm going to weld up a new one same design; heaver + bash plate and 316. I have started on a design for side rail steps/sliders that are fuel tanks using a new 316 box section cross member to link them together (replace existing bolt on one) I tried to make them as one with the main tank but I cannot get them to completely empty without a transfer pump; due to not being able to run a straight tube without going up over the arch, so need to change the filling and make them completely independent from the main tank with pump transfer. As for design the basics are heavy wall 316 tube (pipe) with 6mm plate on the bottom and 3mm on the sides with 6mm plate baffles every 150mm when I finally get it made I'll post pics and drawings in-case anyone else wants to have a go...should be about 8 weeks away. I work away from home so it's taking a bit longer than I hoped.
Cheer Joe

Depending on the quality of shock you are after, I personally would go for either;
Bilstein 7100 in a 10" or 12" short body shock Off Road Warehouse - Shocks Bilstein Shocks Lifted Applications 7100 Series (http://www.offroadwarehouse.com/products/sfID1/12/sfID2/156/sfID3/809)
Or
King Smoothie shocks King Shocks Performance Race Series Smoothie « King Off-Road Racing Shocks : kingshocks.com (http://www.kingshocks.com/products/performance/smoothie-performance-race/)
I have spoken to King about having some made up for the disco.

Did you check the 4" lift comes out at 4".
I have this suspicion that their 3" kit comes out at an easy 4" and the 4" is over 5".

I just assumed that a 4" lift was 4"..I am building everything around this, if it comes out at 5" my drive shafts and body roll will be all wrong..you've got me a bit worried:o, I'll will ring them Monday...Thanks:o:eek:

I like the look of the King shocks; did the indicate how long to make up a set and any idea of cost? After Slunnie's comment I'd better make sure about the height - what started as a simple mod is getting daunting. Need to think what to do if it is 5" to stabilise her...rolled 2 Hilux's during my career I like this old girl too much to lay her down.

If you dont have ACE I wouldnt even consider a 4"+ lift...

hay there, i am currently running the 4 inch rte lift kit in my D2, i am running tom woods drive shafts but i was running around with stock ones for 2 months, that includes the rotoflex coupling still fitted lol, surprisingly i had no issues, no vibrations and the shafts never slid apart, i only ordered tom woods shafts just becuase i didnt want a failure.
I am running fox emulsion 2 shocks and am very happy with them.
btw i know this post is off topic, sorry.
