Treads under this topic is mainly related to GPS navigation but thought appropriate place for this post. (Please feel free to move it)

What I'm after is a GPS device with a motion / tamper sensor with SMS alerting which can be activated/deactivated remotely (click a button on a fob, like your alarm system) that allows me to track the vehicle location.
(Preferably without a service charge from a surveillance company although I'd consider if not to pricey and only viable option)

Do any of you use satellite vehicle security systems for your land rovers, and if so can you recommend companies or devices?

Thanks

I have a TK102 GPS Tracker that I got on ebay for $70.

Its the size of a matchbox & uses your own simcard from a prepaid account

you sms a code to the device & it will send the vehicle location to you in a return sms,
or you can set it to send a location every few minutes, but each time its a sms charge

or you can sms another code to the device and it becomes a monitor and you then call the device and you can hear everything thats happening in the car.

I just leave it in the car and as long as theres about $20 on the simcard I'm happy to know that if the car does get stolen I can find out where it is almost instantly.

Really handy little gadget.

thank you 'goingbush'.

It sounds neat and for that price, well perfect. The only issue would be that without mobile coverage, you can't track it...

PS. I thought about getting a cheap mobile phone and using an app like 'find my friend' to track the vehicle's position, but I won't realise the car is stolen until I get to where I left it... some motion senior to trigger and SMS - hey maybe there's a phone app for that!?

Correct, but I thought from your original post you wanted something with "SMS Alerting " If you have Telstra sim in it at least you will get the best coverage.

Im guessing if your out of the population zone you less likely to get your truck pinched anyway

When we are outback I use a SPOT satellite tracker so that family can keep track of where we are but thats for safety rather than vehicle security.
