A few weeks ago I took a full day lesson in fly fishing on the Goulburn river. Fly fishing was all the fun I expected it to be! I bought a rod that weekend, so I'm ready to go next camping trip on a river. :)

The guy teaching me has been semi-professionally doing it 20+ years - he travels the world fishing and running lessons for beginners to experts honing a particular technique. He said on average 1 in 50 catch a fish on their first day. I caught 2 brown trout on my first day!!! haha :D:D

Also ran into a guy who'd been fly fishing for a year and still hasn't caught anything... :o He was very displeased with my first day. :wasntme:

All the rivers are fishing well at the moment, I've been wanting to try fly fishing for a long time now I'm hoping santa brings me a fly rod and reel this year. Last summer I tried some 2pnd line on a bait caster with a greased leader with a bubble float using crickets and maggots, that was quite successful on the Lake :)

Price maybe a concern, however I would definitely recommend the place I had my lesson/tour/guide.

Goulburn Valley Fly Fishing Centre - Thornton, Australia (http://goulburnvlyflyfishing.com.au/)

If you want to go for a weekend away, they also have a cottage on the property and ponds filled with trout for practicing and the property backs onto the goulburn river. So no matter what skill level you're at there is plenty of options!

We had some fun on the ponds with spinners too. Just catch and release as much as you want. Although it doesn't compare to a catch from the river... ;)

We had 4 boats and 13 blokes. 3 x 6.5m ali and my 5.6m Noosa Cat. Pics of the launch facilities... a bit of wire mesh off the beach! You can do it if you know what you are doing and have a little luck. This year the beach was very soft so a few recoveries but we moored the boats in the bay which saved a lot of time. Whales were unbelievable this year.

So I should be OK beach launching my 5.25 Stacer????
Would modify the trailer with extended drawbar and 3rd wheel.

Launching and retrieving your Stacer will be no problem. We have an extended drawbar but no third wheel. Gnaraloo bay has a nice little drop off that you can use even at low tide so with the extended bar and using the mesh you can get far enough in to drive the boat on to the trailer and then pull her out.

Golden rules are to pick the hardest spot on the beach and use mesh under the rear wheels of the car and the trailer. These are on the beach for all users. I've attached a picture of us recovering Gnarly Cat. Unfortunately we lost a lock pin on the trailer hitch so the biggest guys are being used as ballast! The road in and out to Gnaraloo and the bay eats trailers for breakfast so reinforce as much as you can and when you think it is strong, double it. regards Kevo

Back from a week at Albany.
Fishing was very quiet, weather blew its guts out most days so it meant staying in close. The mrs got the best 2 fish,a 44cm King George as fat as a beer can, which in her excitment lead to the rod not going in the rod holder and to the bottom of the sea.She backed the KG up with another at 41cm and just as fat a few days later.

I saw Blackbetty parked at the boat ramp when I went passed to service the dozers on the woodchip pile. The secret to fishing down here is to ask a nice SA person to shut the door so the wind stops. Glad you managed to get some. I think you should give up the rods and give your wife a gidgee, she did well. A bloke at work got 6 blue manner crabs scooping at night, 1 mtr claw tip to claw tip streached out .
My poor old blueband merc 50 blew up at christmas, but I have now fitted a brownband merc 75 :), so there goes klonks budget for awhile.

That thing looks like it should be 30 pounds, he must have his arms out along way towards the lens to make a 12 pounder look that big. Not that I wouldn't be pleased with a 12 pounder.

That would have been one hell of a good work out. They are speedsters plus. Spaniards are sweet eating. Fully agree fresh is key to great fish noting a very cool Catalyst ABC show on King fish sashimi which had my jaw dropping. Kingfish on this years must do list.

Worth watching except we cannot do this at home.
