View Full Version : Silly Season?

During a near decade long stint working in Darwin I became aware of a phenomenon called "the Silly Season" (often hyped by the media but pretty true based on my experiences too).
The SS consistently occurred during the build up to the wet season. Effectively, lots of crazy stuff happened with people supposedly due to the massive humidity and "electricity" in the air (huge lightening storms occur at this time but with no rain). Divorce and murder rates climbed, suicides and violent crimes were also supposedly on the up... and generally, a lot of normally nice and calm people just got irritable and cranky.

So, to my point... There have been media reports of massive solar flares (and definetly a full moon) in the last week or so. I reckon this "heavenly" activity could have people on edge (self included).

Anyone noticed anything crazy to support this sort of idea? How has your general "mood" been of late?

Also, there are some very well educated members frequenting this forum, with great knowledge. Perhaps there is some data or evidence to support this observation that could be worth posting and "chatting" about. I think I recall seeing reports that we were going to have a big year or two of flares... Should we be getting out the tin foil and making hats for protection!!! ;-)

I (and my wifey) think i suffer from 'seasonal dissorder', when the weather gets cold and rainy like this i get all down and want to move north, when the suns out all is well. Problem is, our business is going well, its a great community we live in, the people are great and the kids like it here. Its just the weather sucks, i used to love the cold weather because it meant snow, and therfore snowboarding, but now as i'm getting older, i can't be stuffed with it, i just want to hang at a nice sunny warm beach:).
think more holidaying through winter will help.:D

By jove , I think you are correct. My eldest son asked for $ 50 , and I gave it to him. I remember the " silly" season in Darwin, however most people go crazy towards the end of the wet, stuck in Darwin and not being able to get out...... We used to send our families south on a C130 for a short while, probably why I'm still alive ;) Bob

With you there Vern. My Darwin experience has me a believer in the weather changing how we function, but how about the moon and the sun?

Mrs just mentioned to me that a friend who works in a hospital says the emergency room ramp up staff levels around full moons?!? And doesn't the moon have something to do with menstrual cycles?

I could be making this all a bit "low brow" at this point... anyone with some further enlightenment?

Could be something to that theory DT.
13 times a year on a 28 day cycle.

I recall some older ladies saying similar things, of course all poohpoohed by younger "better educated" women.

Still seems odd how they coincide very closely though.
