Are there any problems with the td5 motor in the Discovery II? Are they as reliable as the TD4 Discovery I?
And can anyone inform me what landrover was used by the government at the expo 88 brisbane.

I think they're good. Better than the older diesels, not as good as most of the newer ones.

I haven't seen a worn out Td5 yet, they are a very robust engine. The Bicentenary Landies were V8 County 110's converted to dual cab and a short tray with a turntable for the 5th wheel trailers.

About the expo 88 I have a mate who swears they where a 6 wheel drive 4 door utes. he'll be surprised. Thank you about your replies about the td5 the same mate thinks that being common rail there could be problems.:)

Magic....
Better than the newer engines too.
(but thats mainly because they were made by a company that gave a rats about longevity and servicability)

Just hope you don't get a crack in the head. That will hurt to the tune of about 7grand!

AFAIK TD5s are not common rail but "Unitary injection".
Common rail has a pump providing high pressure fuel to a "common rail" and injectors, whereas TD5 sends low pressure fuel to each injector which pressurises the fuel using the camshaft as a pump with duration controlled by a "spill valve" operated by the computer.

The TD5 has individual electronic unit injectors; one for each cylinder. This was a stepping stone between mech and crd injection.look at this url for more info. http://www.landroverclub.net/Club/HTML/Td5engine.htm

The Td5 in my 110 is the best engine I've ever had in any type of car.
they have a few minor issues but very easy to deal with compared to problems encountered with other engines.
I pulled the sump on mine to do the oil pump bolt at 125k (one of the minor issues) and i could not believe how surgically clean it was inside, just as if I'd pulled the sump on a brand new engine.
The fuel economy is as good as my wifes Holden Barina and the performance easily as good as my old V8 90.
I'm certainly hooked.

As above, good engine, love it, great fuel economy.
Like any alloy head, they don't like being overheated. Keep the cooling system in good order and you will be fine.
The centrifugal bypass oil filter keeps the oil from building up a lot of soot, therefore the clean engine.

IMO this is a very nice well built motor. Acknowledging some of the earlier motors have had aproblem with head gaskets, yet this isnt on going, after gasket & dowel replacement.
One of the easiest motors I have ever worked on, reliable, economical and for 2.5 litres, makes anything comparable of the same vintage and younger look like sissys.

My TD5 has 347089 kms on it, uses no oil, 2 owners before me, one a city council, the other a pedantic Englishman, both had been spot on with their servicing, on time every time. I try to follow that example . I think if you look after it ,it would do 500,000 kms , or more. [in that time you will replace all hoses more than once, water pump, and many other wear & tear items.] An engine saver low water alarm is a must have, and a water temp guage is handy. Bob

We have two,, had few common probs with the 99 and only changed at water pump on the 03 . later models have most common problems soughted. Both are at the 200000km mark. The 03 blows no smoke.Regular service like any diesel. Keep them stock and they should go forever, although an EGR bypass in the list.

Mines at 250K. Serviced by the book. Had it since 130K. Had the oil pump bolt done as precaution at 220K. Actually think its getting better. Pretty economical
Im hoping shes less half way though her motoring life.

I've got my 00 td5 with 250K on the clock and fitted with a powerchip and the EGR taken off. Thing hauls now, Much better than stock.
No major problems to address, just general things you would expect from a car with 250K kilometres.

I have owned 1 since Jan this year (2003 Td5 auto 230,000) and I like it, I think as long as you get one that is services properly and don't mind having a go at fixing things yourself with the trusty rave cd and the help from the good people on this forum they are a great 4x4
Good luck
