Disco 1 diff

Hi all

Not been on here for a while, but thanks to those who helped me in the past.

My problem was a serious crunching noise coming from the mid to front of my Disco. I thought it was the gearbox, but after some help from this forum, I discovered it was the front diff.

Dropping the front tail shaft, as suggested by a member on this forum, I could then drive without the noise. This then led me to the diff having the problem, which I still haven't replaced.

By dropping my tyre pressure to 12 pounds and taking it easy, I soon found out that I was still able to drive on the beach (White Hills, to those who may know it, not an easy beach drive, especially the hill climb off).

Anyway, after this long reading, can anyone tell me if their is a compatible diff for the 1991 Discovery? They're getting hard to find in WA. Also, from what I have read, there is a 10 and 24 spline. Is there a standard for the Disco 1?

woops, i think 91 is 10 spline,

front and rear diffs are the same

pulling the tailshaft out means you are driving with the centre diff locked.

it may also be a broken front axle, not the diff.
i suggest you drain the diff oil and poke around in the drain hole with a finger,
if you feel loose sharp bits, yep, diff .
axles just tend to break clean without much scatter of metal.

have fun, but check it before you create more damage.

This suggests to me that the tailshaft may be the culprit, if there is no noise when driving, the front diff is still turning, so if the diff is buggered or a broken axle some noise would still be present, could also be the front half of the diff lock in the TC, Regards Frank.

The usual cause of diff failure is the cross pin snapping. If that's the case, then the side gears will be turning freely without the diff itself turning.

Removing the propshaft stops any drive to the pinion which will turn the diff & make crunchy noises.
